Dating apps scare me. My anxiety about rejection amplifies 10x every time I'm active on one, because every swipe with no results is another person that looked at me and said "pass".

I feel like statistically there should be someone interested in me, but the silence is crushing. It's the same type of feeling I got when applying for dozens of jobs.

nekohayo,
@nekohayo@mastodon.social avatar

@brainblasted I gave up on those years ago, after 10 years(!) of trying every approach conceivable.

The whole industry is owned by Match, filled with bots, apps (& websites) have all become clones of Tinder & are dopamine-fixed to maximize subscriptions—not to help you actually meet a real human.

The demographics are way skewed, the statistical odds are impossible (I have the charts, numbers and archived articles to back this up).

It's poison for the mind.

Wanna help out an old-school utility that just recently accomplished its port to 4? The "File Roller" compressed archives utility needs your help to fix Drag & Drop files/folders extraction to Files (a.k.a. ). Technical investigation and/or patches would certainly be quite welcome. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/file-roller/-/issues/4#note_1782076

It is curious how the netinstall ISO went from 396 MB in Debian 11.3 to 774 MB for Debian 12. Anyone knows what happened to make it nearly double in size like that?

nekohayo,
@nekohayo@mastodon.social avatar

@odo2063 Interesting idea, though I doubt the amount of kernel firmware would have doubled only in the span of the last two years, vs the 27 previous years 🤔️

Continued some performance issue today, this one about significant CPU usage when idle on any logged-in page on Trello.com, even on .

It seems to be spamming the compositor when websites request animation frames even while there's nothing to relayout or repaint. Hopefully optimizing WebKitGTK to handle this would improve perfs / lower power consumption on other sites too. https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=252545

I got one day (today) left in Montreal. Gonna break away to look for bookshops out here - anyone have recommendations? Extra boosting for any left-leaning shops.

Thanks for the other recommendations: I'm going to have to try to get to see more of them when I'm not with family, haha.

nekohayo,
@nekohayo@mastodon.social avatar

@jalcine I haven't tried any of them, but there's a crop of stores that are taking a new approach to the market, maybe this could be of interest? This article goes over what they're doing, and at the end there's a listing of 7 such new book stores and their addresses: https://www.lapresse.ca/arts/chroniques/2023-06-28/les-libraires-n-ont-pas-dit-leur-dernier-mot.php

I could have sent a proposal/estimate to a client this Friday morning, but I thought "Meh, who reads those on a Friday afternoon?" and instead I spent over an hour picking juneberries in the HQ's before the dry out 😅

Fairly good I must say.

Writing this down just because I'm kind of surprised I haven't seen anyone else articulate the same point.

Calling centos-stream an unstable version of RHEL is really a mischaracterization. We're talking about a distro which STARTS with the released version of Fedora, so it's not like they're in there mucking about and breaking things all over. I think the story about what in centos-stream is /testing/ and what is not testing is murky, and no one running EL likes to hear words like "development" or "testing" related to their flavor of EL, so it's confusing, and Redhat is not known for their clear and articulate communication to the community.

All of that aside, and given the assertion that centos-stream should be seriously considered for production use; the singular concrete thing disqualifying it for me is the lack of 5 years of z stream support on the N.10 release. I know we're all supposed to be living in a new world of containers and orchestration and automated deployment, but I still live in a world where I'm deploying servers which I expect to still be running in 5-8 years, and without a supported upgrade path, I'm not interested in deploying centos-stream with the expectation of needing to torch it and start over in less than 5 years.

Just saying. That's the one thing that prevents me from even looking at centos-stream.

nekohayo,
@nekohayo@mastodon.social avatar

@mattdm @kwf The lack of an upgrade path across major releases (unlike my Fedora desktops) absolutely was a factor for me, on top of the rug pull of December 2020.

I now reluctantly run Debian on my servers & for SME clients', as CentOS lost its major advantage over other community distros ("fire-&-forget for 10 years"). I can't go through another timebomb like 2021 ever again; at that point I'd rather upgrade across Debian versions—I trust the Debian project will outlive us all at this point.

It's so absurd that my work laptop, a Lenovo T14s, overheats even when it's slightly warmer. It downthrottles to 400 MHz (yes, megahertz), gets stuck there and has troubles doing anything until it crashes and sometimes even refuses to boot for a while. 😕

(This is a hardware bug for this model, affecting not just Linux, but apparently Windows too, according to hundreds of forum posts on the internet.)

nekohayo,
@nekohayo@mastodon.social avatar

@garrett Sounds like you'll be a happy LVFS/fwupd user whenever presumably Lenovo comes up with a BIOS update for this? Surely this must be a firmware bug, not hardware, right? 👀️

nekohayo,
@nekohayo@mastodon.social avatar

@garrett Surely there are many stupid power management bugs like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHKKcd3sx2c where Linus' team narrowed down a battery-emptying bug with "modern standby" to "it fails to remain in standby when you unplug while in standby"…

I guess that's part of "running recent hardware" 🫤️
Fedora may on rare occasions fail to resume my X220/X220T/T480 from S3 sleep, but I presume it's mostly ironed out because it's "old" hardware.

Funny how the legendary Logitech C920 consistently over-exposes the shot. I always have to set everything—gain, exposure, white balance, focus—manually, using utilities available on Linux, or I lose highlights and midtones detail in my skin and get overly blueish tones on overcast days. I wouldn't be surprised to hear this camera sensor was tested and calibrated only on fair-skinned people.

Anyone in Montreal want to create a co-op to create an ISP? Could we even do that without having to bribe city hall [1]

[1] this is just what the telecartel do anyway. Legal or not.

nekohayo,
@nekohayo@mastodon.social avatar

@hub You'd have to bribe the first to allow the creation of a new telco (especially one that is not just a reseller), the city is probably the least of your problems… good luck with that!
If you can figure out the legal and financial aspects in addition to the technical, I'd be happy to be your marketeer 😉️
