Funny how the legendary Logitech C920 consistently over-exposes the shot. I always have to set everything—gain, exposure, white balance, focus—manually, using utilities available on Linux, or I lose highlights and midtones detail in my skin and get overly blueish tones on overcast days. I wouldn't be surprised to hear this camera sensor was tested and calibrated only on fair-skinned people.

The curse of having an eye for and in videoconferencing 🙄

Current status: emailing some who have been using my pro-bono service for over 10 (sometimes 20!) years, to ask them if they'd like me to migrate their existing websites from my old servers to my shiny new high-performance servers, or if they prefer to avail of the "right to be forgotten" style.

Anyone in Montreal want to create a co-op to create an ISP? Could we even do that without having to bribe city hall [1]

[1] this is just what the telecartel do anyway. Legal or not.

nekohayo,
@nekohayo@mastodon.social avatar

@hub You'd have to bribe the first to allow the creation of a new telco (especially one that is not just a reseller), the city is probably the least of your problems… good luck with that!
If you can figure out the legal and financial aspects in addition to the technical, I'd be happy to be your marketeer 😉️

A world-class firm contacted me today to proceed with a consulting proposal I made for them exactly 4 months ago… not because they needed all this time to make up their mind, but because they just found my reply stuck in their filter today 🤦️

I hate how Microsoft's stupidly overzealous spam filters and policies—that distrust any "external email"—are causing this sort of crap to happen regularly.

Tried the latest version of the app today, and it finally lets me pre-select a bunch of English cryptic crosswords , even though my dad's computer is in French.
It should be a much better experience than noisy and buggy websites.
I trust father will be pleased with this.

I'd be willing to pay in a crowdfunding campaign for someone to implement scheduled email sending (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/411), and snoozing/batch-replying (à la "Hey") in @EvolutionGnome at the client & protocol/servers level — those are important missing UX in , compared to GMail/Hey/Exchange.

I sometimes envy those who surrender to walled SaaS gardens (like https://www.hey.com/how-it-works/ …) in the name of more pleasant UX. I wish we had these features in somehow.

I just discovered this playlist where someone rendered Bobby Prince's 1 and 2 sound tracks on a Roland SC-55, and it is absolutely glorious. I'm rediscovering that soundtrack in a new light. I really want to blog again. But my blog is on Dreamhost, it's super duper slow, they want me to manually migrate it and they're upping my cost. So I'm kind of blocked because I have this notion of containerizing wordpress locally and generating static content I host on github.io but I haven't gotten this new set up together yet. Because, time constraints / I don't know what I'm doing. So I don't blog. And it sucks!

nekohayo,
@nekohayo@mastodon.social avatar

@mairin I've been so fed up with clients' crappy outdated & slow shared hosting plans in recent years, that I'm starting my own high-performance hosting service this year. i.e. I'll be running the whole OS myself again, in a datacenter, and offer managed (if desired) hosting for those who want good perfs without the whole hassle of sysadmining everything. And I'm sure as heck not going to crowd those servers like cheap hosts do. Just in case you or someone else may be interested.

I really wish I could use 12 on the desktop, but I'm still addicted to the GNOME upgrade treadmill; I wouldn't use GNOME 43 given how many issues occurred in that release with GTK4 Nautilus, that were only fully fixable in 44+.

I keep telling myself I'll be able to go back to LTS-style distros, but have been unable to do that since 2012. Either there are old annoying bugs (vs new annoying bugs), or I need to remain on the latest versions to collaborate with upstream developers.

nekohayo,
@nekohayo@mastodon.social avatar

@topher The problem is, volunteers-powered independent projects is not something that can be coordinated in lockstep. Some manage to do it in a short cycle, some take longer than a 2-years-LTS cycle.

Some examples:

  • 10+ yrs for Python 2 apps to migrate to Python 3…
  • 7 months for Pablo to port File-Roller to GTK 4, & he hasn't started gThumb yet!
  • GTG and Pitivi's GTK 4 ports are still ongoing, over a year in the making.

LTS can't happen without funding.

I need to figure out how to consistently get breakfast and lunch into my day.

nekohayo,
@nekohayo@mastodon.social avatar

@brainblasted Does your body feel that need, though?

3-meals-per-day is pretty much an artificial concept created by industrial society…
Personally, so-called "intermittent fasting" is my natural eating cycle; I only eat once or twice per day, pretty much never before 13h00. But beyond even such a concept where you condense all meals within 8 waking hours, you could say the general rule of thumb is just to eat when you are hungry and not about to go to sleep.

I want to tie a treillis to some balcony's vertical railings. It needs to resist 70km/h wind gusts and I need to be able to untie it.

I barely know how to tie my shoes.

So I just learned about jamming & non-jamming , discovering & comparing the Constrictor knot, "Transom knot" lashing, Anchor bend, Bowline, Double Bowline, Triple Bowline, Water Bowline…

I think I'd go for the Water Bowline for simplicity. Surely with paracord (braided nylon) it'll be tough enough, right? 🤔
