I know that I am not the first to bring this up, but #DuckDuckGo is getting more useless by the day. I really try hard to not support fascist billionaires where I can, but the % of times I get useless responses from DDG and have to use Google is now close to 80%.

This is not my experience, but in any case: there are other alternatives out there.

I hadn't heard that Brin and Page are Fascists. That's Elon. I don't like Google's policies and I use Google products as little as possible, but I don't know that Fascist is the right word.

Feature suggestion for or other engines: let me downvote results.

There is just so fucking much utter garbage, and the people pushing it have (apparently) effective SEO. Let me click a button saying "never allow this domain in my search results ever again."

Hmmm ... should we approach the Wikimedia Foundation with a proposal for "WikiSearch"? That is in no way a joke, and I am a regular donor to Wikimedia and would support the project. You could build it using Stract code.

The past year has seen record renewable power production nationwide.

Chiropractors, giraffes, and reality: the Washington Post pretends that chiropractic is anything but a superstition-based placebo: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2024/04/25/giraffe-chiropractor-tiktok-joren-whitley/

Note: there is a minority movement in chiropractic that rejects the original, magic-energy-flows-through-the-spine version of that practice.

The article contains amazingly false balance, as you'd expect from non-science journalists covering science. They can't tell the experts from the quacks.

What Women Want is an utterly bizarre film, and it's hard to believe it became a smash hit just a quarter century ago. Mel Gibson gains the power to hear all women's thoughts, and uses it to... commit plagiarism and become a better corporate shark.

Completely mind boggling to me that we threw away 5 billion phones in 2022.

Some of those could have been repurposed: smartphones are hardly innovating any more. The most eco-friendly phone is the one you already have.

We need to publicly support communities like @postmarketOS who work on making these phones repurposable, and @gnome that work on making a polished mobile experience that serves people, not creepy corporations.

It is now illegal in Kentucky to expose the illegal treatment or processing of animals.

When exposing crime is punished, you are governed by criminals.

To clear up some confusion, the red legislature passed this Ag-Gag law, the governor vetoed it, then the legislature overturned the veto, with a few dissenting votes - but not enough to stop the overturn. So the Ag-Gag law is now adopted.

@charliejane Perhaps you've already done this, and I missed it, but have you done similar things for old (and many terrible) SFF stories with gender transformation, e. g. Heinlein's I Will Fear No Evil? I am not a movie person, but I would be curious about your reaction to, say, the Jack Chalker books (there are many) in which men are turned into sexy women.

British scientist Rosalind Franklin died in 1958.

Her most famous contribution to science came from her X-ray diffraction images of DNA, particularly Photo 51, which provided crucial evidence for the double helix structure of DNA. Her photo was shared without her knowledge with J. Watson & F. Crick, who used it as a basis for their model of DNA's structure. Their work overshadowed her contribution, & she was not fully recognized for her role until after her death.

nitpicking,
@nitpicking@mstdn.party avatar

@gutenberg_org Check your timeline. Franklin died in 1958, not 1956.
