Argh! I think I found out why my Debian EC2 VM isn't acquiring a DHCP address. Its because I was deleting machine-id!

I am building an AMI for rapid deployment of Gitlab CI workers, and part of the preparation phase is to delete /etc/machine-id so that every clone has a unique value. But! The default option for networkd is to generate the DUID using a hash of machine-id. That file won't be generated since in early boot /etc is read-only.

The solution is to write uninitialized, not delete it.

I have spent so much time automating something in AWS, waiting 20 minutes to see if that worked, changing something, and doing the whole loop over again. DevOps is fun, but the long, long feedback cycles are rough. And 20 minutes is tiny compared to other things I'm working on! Iterating on a database backup & sanitization process that takes 8 HOURS to run! Ugh.

This is a fucking crazy team. I have worked with some teams! Michael and Tracy's EnterAct team, Al's Secure Networks team, Dug Song's Arbor team, Jeremy and Dave and my Matasano team; even when things were rough, I got to work with Erin and Patrick at Starfighter. I feel like I have a well-calibrated team-o-meter. This team is nuts. I get why people work at "startup" startups like this. https://fly.io/about

nogweii,
@nogweii@nogweii.net avatar

@tqbf Double-checking, you're not trying to find a single set of books that covers all of those disciplines? 'Cause if so, I think that's very challenging and only made possible/easy if you split them into separate piles of books (with some overlap, I'm sure).

nogweii,
@nogweii@nogweii.net avatar

@tqbf hm. Probably wouldn't be wise to build a list of like 20, or even 50, books. Each one narrowly focused, but how likely is someone going to read all of those books? So back to the original problem... Tricky indeed.

Just finished season 3 of the Jack Ryan series. Wow. That was a nailbiter and it felt entirely within the realm of possibilities.

@major oh, that reminded to look up season 4. I was waiting for it to come out - and it had, last summer. Thanks for giving me some weekend watches. 🤩

Man, sleep apnea sucks. A whole day lost due to a massive headache that won't go away. A body that shuts off it's own airflow and then freaks out - what great stuff, evolution. 🫠

    Oh my gosh I just figured it out.

    Okay, all you open source evangelist people: your knee-jerk reaction to come at people who are talking about a problem with whatever commercial software they use and suggest Your Favorite Alternatives™ is exactly like saying "why don't you just buy a house?" to someone complaining about their landlord.

    EDIT: There's more than one post here. Pick apart the analogy if you will but... beware you'll be proving the point.

    @mjg59 what did you end up sending to the C++ code? Something like a binary tagged value stream?

    What if the webserver Puma listened on for both HTTP and HTTPS on the same port? It could redirect plain text clients to the encrypted version, from http://localhost:3000/ to https://localhost:3000/. It'd make the use of a TLS certificate for development just that much better. Let me know if that's too crazy - https://github.com/puma/puma/issues/3285

    Oh wow, Nextcloud is adopting RoundCube. https://nextcloud.com/blog/open-source-email-pioneer-roundcube-comes-aboard-nextcloud/ I'm excited to see how that progresses both projects! Whilst they don't plan on merging at all, I would like to see some amount of unification between the two. Making it easy to fully integrate all of the PIM features.

    Gotta love a headache that won't go away, even after 3 days. Oh, and I grimace when their is any sudden change in light or sound, which momentarily worsens the headache. Am I terribly sick???

    ...looks up symptoms...

    Oh. I have a migraine, just not one the typical debilitating version I've had. Instead its just a long lasting, ever-present pain. Goody.

    Written news articles often have a secret language to them which hints at the underlying reporting process - language like "according to two people familiar with the board’s deliberations".

    I don't think these are at all obvious to people who haven't worked in news, so I wrote an article about them:

    Deciphering clues in a news article to understand how it was reported
    https://simonwillison.net/2023/Nov/22/deciphering-clues/

    nogweii,
    @nogweii@nogweii.net avatar

    @simon whilst I was somewhat familiar with the turn of phrases, it was made much more clear with the recent/relevant examples right next to the explanation.

    So I echo that sentiment - I'd love to see journalists write more about how they communicate information learned from (publicly) anonymous sources!

    I’ve been incredibly angry — furious, even for ME — about the most loathsome and contemptible defamation suit I’ve ever seen in my career, and now Mike Masnick at TechDirt has written about the despicable case and about my anti-SLAPP motion to dismiss it. Reading it just makes me angrier.

    https://www.techdirt.com/2023/11/20/if-you-kill-two-people-in-a-car-crash-you-shouldnt-then-sue-their-relatives-for-emailing-your-university-about-what-you-did/

    saving a future googler’s life:
    “error: universal character name refers to a control character” ansi terminal control color code

    change \u001b to \033

    I don’t know why \u’s aren’t supposed to resolve to control characters and I don’t know why some compilers actually enforce that but you’re welcome

    Peak fossil Americana. The gas station IS the tourist attraction.

    40 some pumps, 10 EV chargers, footprint of a Walmart. 100 lb bags of corn by the palletload at the entrance. Bathroom rivaling the Victorian toilets in Rothesay Scotland.

    And two roundabouts on the way out each with one exit. What.

    I do with wonder if their long play with this is, we're gonna need facilities this size for mass EV charging. But it just seems too big dumb America for that.

    nogweii,
    @nogweii@nogweii.net avatar

    @joeyh my only hope is that the fossil heads will see the empty EV stalls and switch to take advantage of the lack of lines.

    Here's a little new project of mine:

    https://github.com/poettering/diskomator

    It's an mkosi-built OS-in-a-single-EFI-binary whose only job is to expose all local disks via NVMe-TCP. You can write it to an USB stick, or drop it in your ESP, and if you boot it, all block devices are exposed to the network. The suggested command line to connect to this disk is shown on screen.

    This makes use of the systemd-storagetm service we added for systemd v255, as well as the esp output added in mkosi v19.

    @nextcloud backlink tracking & internal linking. Supporting the wiki esque [[ ]] syntax and being able to use it to jump between notes. Simply recognizing that syntax and providing the details in the API would be plenty for other tools to build upon.
