You guys hip to Google's new beautifully named Web Environment Integrity (https://github.com/RupertBenWiser/Web-Environment-Integrity) thing?

Seems they want to force everyone to provide identity data to use the internet. And their justification:

"Users like visiting websites that are expensive to create and maintain, but they often want or need to do it without paying directly. These websites fund themselves with ads, but the advertisers can only afford to pay for humans to see the ads, rather than robots."

@mastodonmigration @lauren They didn't evolve to this. It has been their business model from the start. It's just that their customers have become disenchanted with the old data sets and need more pure specific data about their users.

A year or so back, Jim Beam put out tv ad that had this Everyday Normal Guy on some Main Street saying "We used to think The Welcoming Spirit was a small-town thing" but dur-hurr hey look, he's mixing with more cosmopolitan types and cityfolk're nice too!

As the romantic ode to small-town lynching is all abuzz, I'd like to chime as someone who grew up in a burg of 750 to say this "Welcoming spirit" as a small-town thing A) is bullshit and B) the likelihood of small-town people murdering you because "you ain't from around hereโ„ข" has not been higher at least since I was born, which was a time wherein interracial marriage was still illegal in a lot of the country and Black people were being beaten, firehosed and murdered for trying to exercise the right to vote in parts of it - actions supported vocally, I learned later, by kindly Christian people in my own family - so here's a song about growing up in that clime that I'd like to put forward as a counterpoint.

    @skua @Teri_Kanefield Again, we made a TV personality a president. He turned out to be a crime lord. No one, not a single person on this planet, predicted that he would instigate an insurrection or steal classified documents. What we have been aware of is that he was a POS his entire life. This country does have an unhealthy tolerance for that as evidenced by the current social media meltdown. We will not elect someone sitting in a courtroom.

    ๐Ÿ… About my sandwich: The tomato slices were cold and juicy with a flavor I've loved since the first one I remember. I was 7 and spending the Summer with Mom's parents.

    The tomato was from Papa's garden, and white Bunny Bread slices were smeared with lots of Duke's mayo. Granny taught me to cook a little that Summer, and explained some basic "always" rules. Duke's, only Duke's, and nothing but Duke's. It's a Southern tradition.

    Of course, that's what I spread on my oat-nut slices today.
