Was approached by Mormon missionaries. I told them I didn’t speak a word of English

nwchapman,

@skinnylatte We once saw missionaries coming up the drive to the door, and so all hurriedly undressed and answered the door naked. That worked.

Why Norway — the poster child for electric cars — is having second thoughts

Electric cars are crucial, but not enough to solve climate change. We can’t let them crowd out car-free transit options.

If you're an anxious type who doesn't like driving, but think you are a pretty decent driver: how long did it take for you to feel comfortable? What helped you feel less anxious?

I didn't grow up with cars or near cars: I've done enough instruction and behind-the-wheel time to pass the test I think, but I worry about real world conditions.

I probably won't drive in the city or daily (my commute is a 3 min bike ride) but I'd like to be able to drive to nearby places (Mendocino, Pescadero..)

nwchapman,
@nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte @eniatitova You could try to always get the same kind of car when you rent. That’s what I did when I traveled a lot for work.

But I find, even with the one car, driving it as infrequently as I do it’s always a bit of an adjustment when I first start in it on any particular day.

    Why we can't have nice cities:

    Here's someone who works at a downtown hotel: "I live in Dogpatch, and I usually drive to work."

    It's two miles. 11 minutes by car. But 16 minutes by transit or by bicycle. And Google says it's a 48 minute walk, though it wouldn't take me that long.

    Why do they drive to work? Probably because they get free parking at the hotel. And it saves them... 5 minutes

    Ugh. Kinda tired of (1) all the errors in SF Standard articles, though errors are not confined to them, and (2) this line SF Standard seems determined to push that one politico basically dreamed up night markets when things like that have been happening for years, and various people - including me - have been pushing for more of them for years, and raising concerns about some of the regulatory speed bumps for them, something I broached in a big City Hall meeting back in 2019...

    (Most unsubtle error in the piece is that the night market was not on the consent calendar.)

    The Tenderloin in SF is oft-maligned. People are afraid of it, and point to it as proof of many of San Francisco's problems.

    To me, my neighborhood welcomes all: including immigrants and homeless people. Almost all of my neighbors are people of color. Its languages are Vietnamese, Teochew, Spanish and Yucatec Maya.

    I'm deeply suspicious of anyone who shits on the TL. We also have the best farmers market

    (Minolta XD-11, 45mm f2, Ilford FP4, Rodinal)

    nwchapman,
    @nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

    @bluestocking @skinnylatte The farmers market on Clement Street is also good. Quite a few people travel out to it from Bayview/Excelsior on the 44. You get a lot of people taking the bus to Heart of the City as well. Alemany is just not that accessible, really. I mean, that whole part of the City isn't really. One of my goals is to see about getting farmers markets in every neighborhood. We added new ones in the Outer Sunset and North Beach during the pandemic. There was a brief trial for one out in Bayview, but they couldn't really make a go of it. Getting ones there and in OMI would be the top priorities for me at this point.

    nwchapman,
    @nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

    @mikec415 @bluestocking @skinnylatte It's an interesting question of density. There's the Inner Sunset one... and there used to be the Divisadero/nopa one, but that shut down for reasons that are not clear to me. And Upper Haight / Cole Valley is pretty well served by decent grocery stores.

    I'd like one, but if were taking a more general stance, I'd probably plump for a Western Addition one.

    nwchapman, (edited )
    @nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

    @skinnylatte @mikec415 @bluestocking I had thought it stopped operation, but apparently I was wrong
    I guess I never go that way on Sundays anymore

    (Also I'm much more aware of the ones I'm involved in permitting, for obvious reasons, and when the Divisadero one moved to the DMV lot, it dropped off my radar. I'd actually tried to get it moved to the former Lowell/John Adams yard at one point - a space I'd still like to see something use...)

    If you learn Marcella Hazan’s tomato sauce recipe you will never want to buy pasta sauce in a jar again

    nwchapman,
    @nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

    @skinnylatte it's one of my go-tos, though I do sometimes add garlic cloves, occasionally fresh basil

    The one thing I will say that I really think has to be done with this recipe is: use proper Italian San Marzano tomatoes when making it. They cost more, but it's worth it. Strianese is the brand I see around here most often; Rega and Cento are also good.

    nwchapman,
    @nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

    @skinnylatte It's my preferred brand, for sure.

    I also found this. It says the Muir Glen San Marzano STYLE ones are okay. I've certainly used them, and they're the ones I use in many soups and stews, even my Marcella minestrone sometimes. But I do try to only use real San Marzano when making pasta sauce.

    https://www.epicurious.com/expert-advice/best-canned-tomatoes-san-marzano-italian-taste-test-article

    (I just had a look on Amazon. Prices there for proper San Marzano seem high. You can get them cheaper even via Instacart, and certainly just picking them up at Gus' or Rainbow.)

    nwchapman,
    @nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

    @skinnylatte Hopefully not for $8/can which is what Amazon is charging.

    nwchapman,
    @nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

    @skinnylatte MUCH better. That's the cheapest I've seen them for, in many years of buying them around here.

    @lzg I have literally, no lie, played bird sounds through my noise cancelling headphones as the only way of getting a quiet bird sound experience in parts of Golden Gate Park.

    (I have a 4 CD collection of American bird sounds. I suppose I could mix it up with some African savannah sounds for a more interesting walk...)
