    @divya @davidho I'm not even sure we need to go to indigenous people as opposed to just the past of our cultures. I grew up in a somewhat archaic or anachronistic way - at various times living places with goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks, etc., and/or hunting deer and rabbits, going fishing. Not everyone does that in ways that respectful to the animals, but lots of people do, certainly the people I was around did. And the farmers and shepherds I've known have been kind and respectful, friendly even with sheep or pigs they were planning on slaughtering (though with limits). It's often palpable - that moment when someone is connecting respectfully with an animal they are going to kill, expressing a kind of gratitude to them and to the natural world.

    I don’t understand how healthcare works in this country, but I wanted a Novavax vaccine and Costco has it. Confusingly, Costco also tells you it’s a hundred dollars as you book it, but when you get there it’s 0 dollars (with insurance). Probably also still free for those without insurance. It feels very American to go get a vaccine at Costco. On cyber Monday. I don’t believe you need to be a member to use their pharmacy.

    @joshourisman @skinnylatte I hear the phone in DC is actually pretty awesome generally... still wouldn't want to live there, but it's interesting to think about.

    Probably obvious why. If you look at food around here - "ethic food" - you can trace it, of course, to various waves of people arriving from elsewhere, and sometimes to the effect of a few specific people. I remember when West African food really took off in Oakland and how it seemed to be related to a few people/groups.

    If money weren't an issue, and I wanted to take a sabbatical, I would become a parking control officer for a year. I would love to go around my neighborhood ticketing sidewalk and crosswalk parkers.

    nwchapman,
    @nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

    @mattlaroche You can use the 311 app and report all of them - some of them will get ticketed. It's not quite as satisfying, but...

    (I have been assaulted doing this, though - something to consider.)

    nwchapman,
    @nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

    @enobacon @mattlaroche Apparently there is something like that for reporting idling vehicles in NYC. It would really be cool if there was something like that for stuff like illegal parking in SF.

    This is such a depressing way to present San Francisco as "a City of firsts" to the world.

    No sex, drugs and rock and roll, nothing about what makes or made San Francisco the "Paris of the West," "Cool, Grey City of Love" or "Baghdad by the Bay."

    Basically just tech

    This SF Mission burrito list, I fully agree with. Finally! (Tho I don’t love El Farolito as much as people do, I love the rest)

    Also worth noting the no 1 spot, La Vaca Birria, is halal

    nwchapman,

    @skinnylatte I also am not as into Farolito as most other people seem to be. But I've often suspected that might just be personal - when i was a kid, there were La Cumbre people and El Farolito people. We were La Cumbre people. It's not what it was, but I still have this baked in - refried? - loyalty that sticks.

    nwchapman,
    @nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

    @skinnylatte Well, there's a whole category of "drunk food" - I know I am much less demanding of my burritos, tacos, and nachos when I've had a few beers. I guess like chips or curries or doner kebad in the UK.

    Is there a Singapore or Malaysian equivalent - food people go for when a bit smashed, often served up right outside nightclubs or wherever?

    6 months ago when I had my beloved Rivendell bike stolen, everyone told me: it’ll turn up in a couple of months. I wanted to believe them but I wasn’t sure I did!

    Few things in my favor: my Riv Road Standard was a custom frame in 1995, the size and color doesn’t really exist at all so it was very unique. If you see it, you know it’s my bike. So almost exactly 6 months to the day I got a Reddit message from someone saying they have my bike!
