My mum wants Dungeness crab - done simply. Any suggestions for delivery or a place with a good parklet?

nwchapman,
@nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte No judgement but I have a massive emotional block against going to Costco. Never done it. I’m weird about a few stores/companies like that.

I’d like a crab in black bean sauce from a Southern Chinese restaurant but she prefer something simpler.

@skinnylatte TJ’s was like that for me as well, even before their current union busting. Now? Burn it down and salt the earth. I totally get why people like the economies of shopping at CostCo. As far as EVOO goes, though - we’re good for a few months. Brought back a big supply from my aunt’s place.

Renovation of Chinatown park inspires artistic look at urban space

New exhibition at Chinese Culture Center, which has neighbored Portsmouth Square for over 50 years, offers some insight into the dynamic nature of urban experience.

For people wondering, it seems like this is where you go to recycle battery powered toothbrushes and, uh, similar products of a personal nature that have batteries and circuits

(cough vibrators cough)

Given how prevalent that stuff is now, I feel like they need more locations and an easier why to handle, or it will all end up in landfill.

Interesting thread conversation between @MsMerope and @ai6yr about the early days of the pandemic from their unique perspectives. So important that we don't memory hole what it was really like back then.

@HumToTable @MsMerope @ai6yr One of the first things I did at work for the City’s pandemic response was work on an inventory of refrigerated morgue slots and consider locations for portable morgue trucks. Grateful all that work was wasted effort.

Why don't we barter amongst ourselves more? Why isn't this a thing?

nwchapman,
@nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

@wannabemystiker @StillIRise1963 I used to regularly barter tech support for other services, like massages and home repair. I did it on an hour for hour basis sometimes and a job for job basis others. Like, you fix my toilet and I’ll fix your problem with your printer, that sort of thing.

As one of the people involved in the design and implementation of the parklet program since the very beginning, I have many, many thoughts. But I probably can't really share most of them.

I will say that many of the parklets have never been in compliance, not even at the very beginning, but they were allowed to persist despite that for... reasons. (I don't think that was a good idea and articles like this are part of why.)

Rules had to be changed as the initial parklet program was never intended to be permanent. When it was decided it would be permanent, obviously additional measures for safety and accessibility needed to be considered.

But most of the complaints along the lines of "they changed the rules and now I have to tear my parklet down" that I've actually looked into have not had merit.

Got the shingles vaccine yesterday- strongly recommended by my GP.

It. Is. Kicking. My ass.

But having watched both my parents suffer with really miserable shingles outbreaks, I’m grateful there’s a vaccine and I could get it easily and for free. (Kaiser)

This is the first vaccine in ages that’s wiped me out, but I was prepared for it - why I got it on a Friday. I’d seen plenty of people reporting that it hit them hard and my GP warned me as well.

Just got all the test results back as well. Doing quite well on everything which is an enormous relief. The few things that were out of range before are back in the zone. (Could still stand to lose a few pounds though, I think, and of course more exercise continues to be warranted.)

Isn't the most important meal of the day?
For the past four? years, that's been my go-to. Two medium bananas, 40g of peanut butter, and a generous sprinkle of cinnamon!
Is this another TMI moment?
My family thinks I'm a bit of a weirdo. 🧐
What's your go-to breakfast? I am curious to know. 😊

nwchapman,
@nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

@elizach I’ve been meaning to try some savory porridges - oatmeal, but starting with sautéing some onions and garlic and then tossing in the oats, and adding some more stuff. Sort of a jook with oats not rice.

    @divya It's interesting to consider how we are pushing for more urban density as it offers some real advantages - if done right - on various climate things, but at the same time also cuts us off more and more from the nature world, from the traditional sources of food - though there are ways to address that.

    (I used to teach environmental ed to CA school kids and one of the things we did was take them to a working old-fashioned farm.)
