This is not a memory efficiency thing!
WhatsApp is not storing the group size variable as an unsigned char. Because that only goes to 255.

It's just an int and there's a programmer that finds the number 256 to be neat.

How do I know? This is an old story. Current limit is 1024.

Just... in the end. Make numbers for humans (if you can).

Wanna make a group size limit? Do 50, or 100. Putting it at 64 is just weird UX. Yes, your nerd brain will be happy, but you make applications for users. So make them happy.

This whole "Iceland has no mosquitos" fact is useless. Please stop sharing it.

Iceland still has a bunch of flies that are close relatives to the mosquito that bite and suck blood. Midges and gnats.

We even have a whole lake named after them.

Saying that there are no mosquitos is technically correct but what people are taking away from it is that there are no annoying biting flies, which is wrong.

Another fact. I have never received an offensive or harassing DM. Yes, never.
