This is our cat, Sushi. An absolute love, but always wanted to be the only cat in the house. Likes to pick fights with the others, but is an absolute love when curled up on your lap.

I finally finished writing up my response to Marc Andreessen's ridiculous manifesto.

I don't expect many people will read my writing, but damn, I'm sick of billionaire tech-bros condescendingly patting us on the head and telling us we're being silly.

Whenever I post about , I get detractors pointing out problems with them, or I get people cheering them on.

I decided to write a full article explaining many of the pros and cons you should consider if you're thinking about microservices. It's a bit of a longer read, but it's an important topic that a small toot won't cover.

Updated my Pro and it again replaced my backticks with the useless § symbol. I've also lost my tilde. Really, really ticked off that keeps doing this.

Doesn't help that I'm using a French keyboard remapped to a US one and system settings doesn't seem to let me actually set the damned things.

One of our team leads as a good programmer, but not a great one. The people under him were awesome. So he would have them laboriously explain their technical proposals. They would have to oversimply explanations so that he could understand. It was painful.

It was also amazing how many times this revealed overarchitecting of the code. Best team lead ever.

If wasn't dying out, I'd want to learn more and seek work. The world's largest telephony over ATM network ran on Erlang and had 9 nines (!) of availability. That's 31 milliseconds of downtime per year.

Part of why it was so reliable is that it's a language which basically makes you write for all functionality, but with much of the infrastructure support built in. What an amazing technology.

, and are written in Erlang.

Anyone in the UK know how to look up court records? Are they public?

I worked with this man briefly, before he was accused of industrial espionage. One day he just stopped showing up to work. I can't find anything else on the web about it.

Out of curiosity, I tried a service which scans your CV and makes recommendations for tailoring it. Those recommendations are based on popular CV scanning tools used by recruiters/HR.

I was kind of impressed with the quality of results. I was less impressed that the results it presented to me were for someone else's CV. I then found them on LinkedIn.

I'll be contacting the company to let them know about the security issue, so I'm not naming them here.

Direct , where voters can propose and vote in legislation sounds great—ignoring the bought-and-paid-for politicians. Turns out it's not so great for two big reasons.

  1. Corporations are often behind those voter initiatives, with the "will of the people" directly serving the wealthy.

  2. Even when it's not, poorly thought-out laws get written (for Oregonians, think "Bill Sizemore") that can gut the government's ability to function.

Ever struggle with design? Do you just not get it?

I have a talk, "how to fake a database design", that will explain the basics to you. You can't learn all of it in an hour, but if you watch it a few times and let it sink in, it will help you tremendously.

This talk was in Bulgaria, but it I gave the same talk at OSCON and got 5/5 stars for it.

As you may know, my niece was shot this morning (evening in TX) while walking down the street in a city she was visiting. A random drive-by shooting. She’ll live, but they can’t remove the bullet. She’ll probably have to pay a fortune for having her life saved.

The , culturally, doesn’t give a damn about people being shot. have more protection than people.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that you think Jim Jordan should be of the House. You don't care about his conspiracy theories, his support for the January 6th insurrection, or that he ignored sexual abuse of the students he was coaching.

But even then, consider this: in his 16 years in Congress, he's not passed a single bill. Not one.

Even if you like him, he has a proven track record of failure. Is that what you want?

I’m an American living in France. Does anyone know why so many streaming services offer English-language films, dubbed in French, without allowing the original English version? I could follow if they had French subtitles, but often even that is not available. I assume it is some weird rights issue.

Ah, , I love you.

Went to a children's bookstore a few years ago. There was a book by the cash register whose title, translated into English, was "Why the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer."

I asked the lady behind the counter (in French) "Isn't this a children's bookstore?"

"Yes, it is," she replied.

"That doesn't seem like a children's book."

"It's a special edition edited for children."

One of my favorite laws is that it is (usually) illegal to damage the presumption of innocence.

Without a conviction:

The press can't publish mugshot photos.

There are no "perp walks."

Press reports of trials often don't name the accused.

The US should adopt this, but the lynchmob culture wouldn't allow it.

Just a few of the things created or improved. I suspect that research may be the most profitable thing the US government has done.

  • Air quality monitors used in smokestacks
  • Better structural analysis technologies
  • Energy efficient insulation
  • Freeze-dried food
  • Machinery lubricants
  • Many new medical techniques
  • New hydroponics techniques
  • Scratch resistant lenses
  • Semiconductors
  • Smoke detectors
  • Solar energy
  • Water purification systems
  • Weather forecasting

I miss the early days of caller ID. My voicemail message said "This is Curtis, the famous psychic. I know who you are, so hang up."

And people would hang up.

And were later stunned when I called them back.
