The more I think about it, the crosser I am. With a majority of 18,349, Gove's seat looked very much at risk, and he, frankly, denied me a joyous moment on July 4th

The Tories are bastards like that.

@hitsuyonai @JP5484 @Geri @Wen I can't imagine there will be anything like the partying in 1997. Just a feeling of relief that they've finally gone.

But none of the hope we had in 1997. Fourteen years of Tory rule have hollowed the UK, and Labour won't have the resources to get much working.

@Wen @Geri the plural of Portillo is something to look forward to! (I said that yesterday, too...!)

@Wen @hitsuyonai @JP5484 @Geri and he can't stand down before the election!!!

patrickhadfield,
@patrickhadfield@mastodon.scot avatar

@hitsuyonai @Wen @JP5484 @Geri I believe so. The LibDems home neighbouring constituencies and (if I recall) gained council seats in his constituency. There are boundary changes to the constituency which mean it loses some Tory areas and gains some LibDem areas.

Let’s start looking forward to it: how will YOU celebrate the utter humiliation and potential annihilation of the Tory party on 4th July?

@girlonthenet a friend on FB asked "what's the plural of Portillo?"

My only answer was "something to look forward to"!

I had to call BT, using my mobile.

To verify that I was who I said I was, BT said they'd send me a PIN code. To my mobile.

I explained that sending a code to the phone that was calling them wouldn't verify that it was actually me - it would verify the number they'd sent the code to (which they knew already, because they knew the number that was calling them).

A completely useless security process that proves nothing.

The operator probably wished he hadn't picked up my call...

Jay Rayner on a Syrian-Greek restaurant in Aberystwyth. I'm never likely to go, but I read it - and I'm sharing it - because I love Rayner's writing about food. As generous and compassionate as the food he describes!

Summerhall, an arts complex in Edinburgh housed in a former veterinary college, is being sold.

This is a petition to hope it remains a centre for visual arts, music, dance, theatre and film. It also houses a brewery and a gin distillery, with an excellent pub, so it's got something for everyone!

It's a brilliant space throughout the year - not just during the Fringe!

@ScotHomestead according to the Skinny (an Edinburgh arts magazine), "All planned events, including Summerhall's upcoming shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, will take place as planned, and Summerhall Management Ltd say all existing tenant leases will remain in place, with tenants given the option to extend."

But who knows for how long?

@RickiTarr Errollyn Wallen is a British composer. She used to play in rock bands but now writes "contemporary classical". I've never heard music by her I didn't enjoy!

She also lives in a lighthouse on the west coast of Scotland. A very cool person!

I've just seen Evie Waddell in Edinburgh's TradFest. I'm not well versed in traditional folk music, but this was just brilliant. She sings in Gaelic, Scots and English, and signs many of her songs. She even taught the audience how to sign some bits. She also acts out the words and dances.

Her enthusiasm is so infectious! The whole thing was simply wonderful.

If trad/folk is your thing - or even if it's just good music and a great time - get to see her!

Do you think there's ever been a sort of collective agreement in the history of humanity where most people have thought - yep, we're living through such a great period right now ?

I mean - 2012 felt pretty good to me. The Olympics. David Cameron left his daughter in the pub. Savile was outed. Malala survived a shooting. The Conservatives hadn't built up to full steam yet. That guy did a big jump from space. We had Gangnam Style. And that old woman ruined then hilariously repainted that Jesus fresco. That felt like a good year. Although Bieber and fucking Mumford and Sons were still going strong.
