After culturally cleansing ’s Chinatown the is now making ethnic specialty groceries illegal.

Because, and this can’t be stressed enough, they are xenophobic fascist cowards using a lie to scare the majority into being complicit.

And is letting them.

Anyone know if there’s a mechanism to find out online which cycle lanes have been cleared following a snowfall?

peter_mcmahan,
@peter_mcmahan@mas.to avatar

@heliomass
Something showing how recently the bike (and car) lanes have been plowed would be incredibly useful. It would mean I could plan my route ahead of time. Instead, I always seem to hit a completely unrideable street on my way anywhere.

It’s October for hell’s sake.

@heliomass idk the snow feels like one of the first normal weather things that's happened this October. what's weird about this October snow is that we haven't even had a frost yet.

Finally get getting around to posting some of the lichen, fungus, and moss we encountered in Quebec a couple of weeks ago. More in the replies.

Some kind of cool mushroom. I have no idea what. It looks like a paper cup full of Nougat.

@anathema_device thanks! Those ones were really fascinating.

there's a very large number of doors N < ∞, behind 1 door there's a prize you really want, behind all the others there's shit. You choose 1 door. I then open N-2 remaining doors, all leading to a steaming pile of shit. You can now choose to stick to your initial choice or switch

Is there a place here on Mastodon for french learners? I want to see some french posts that I could interact with, but as a learner.

What hashtags/groups/accounts do I follow?

peter_mcmahan,
@peter_mcmahan@mas.to avatar

@writeblankspace I get a lot of French practice by following the hashtag. I think generally following a hashtag for a francophone city would get you a lot of French content.

I would really love a search engine that, when I search for an package, just leads me to the appropriate github or CRAN site. How does something as unusable and parasitic (imho) as rdocumentation.org always end up at the top of every search?

In Fast Company, I argued that it's time for the US and Canada to end right-on-red, a policy that needlessly endangers pedestrians and cyclists.

@davidzipper

Before I moved to Montreal I would have ardently supported right-on-red. But after cycling, walking, and occasionally driving in the city with no right on red for the past five years it's become crystal clear how much allowing the practice makes cities hostile toward humans.

It really only makes sense if you consider cars to be the only kind of 'traffic' on our streets.

Wow. RStudio (recently rebranded as Posit) is partnering with Palantir. Yes, the same Palantir with ties to Cambridge Analytica. The same Palantir that partners with and actively supports ICE and other oppressive surveillance.

This is really not ok ethically, and can only mean a bad direction functionally for the company's software going forward. I never use RStudio for research myself, but it looks like I'll stop using it in teaching.
