You know what I am grateful for? It has been hype after hype of "generative AI" for last year. And yet, Mastodon for me is quite mute with this nonsense. Thank you for this. It is not a small thing. Genuine people with genuine expressions.

Ironiski, ka filma Day After Tomorrow nu jau ar katru mēnesi kļūst tuvāka patiesībai. Režisors starp citu cēla traci par globālo sasilšanu 20 gadus atpakaļ.

While GOP blocking Ukraine help might help putin in short run, it will revitalise the EU role and make the USA's role in support even smaller. If that is the cost of Europe starting to boost up its defence production, so be it. It might not to be as cunning plan as much as trump trying to offer putin something, hopeful in return.

Denial phase of many people about fact that we have to phase fossil fuels now makes for excellent comedy, but highlights same issues essentially as pandemic. Humans are not driven by logic. We are driven by mess of associations, hopes, dreams, expectations. Quite a few people in West can't imagine their lives without cars, or traveling on too regular basis, despite not requiring it for sustained living.

Creator is a must see for sci-fi nerds and those who enjoy challenging themes in science fantasy wrapper. Sometimes a bit on the nose, sometimes pacing is strange, but it is a visual feast, well acted, and while being formulaic, still manages to provoke some reflection on the human condition

Finally caught up with design update of - design work for all these years have been highlight for me and one of major reasons why GNOME matters, and team did not disappoint this year either. @cassidy have brought slides and reference to YouTube stream together https://cassidyjames.com/talks/guadec-2023/gnome-design-state-of-the-union/ - go check it out, it is amazing stuff 🤩
p.s. yes, I organized a thing, but I really did not have much time to watch this 😅

Really liking wondows management proposal from team so far. Ready to try it out for every day usage and see what fits. Also interesting idea to make sure app windows provide extra information how they want to look like https://blogs.gnome.org/tbernard/2023/07/26/rethinking-window-management/

Inspired by talks, I tried nightly GNOME Web build. So smooth and responsive. Trying out NewsFlash as well, just need to find time to read 😅 . And last but not least, Fractal 5.0 now does not lag anymore when switching rooms, so I am very close to ditch Matrix web client, yaaaaay! 🎉 😀

a megathread for developments on Reddit and with third-party Reddit apps

just so this doesn't overwhelm our front page too much, i think now's a good time to start consolidating discussions. existing threads will be kept up, but unless a big update comes let's try to keep what's happening in this thread instead of across 10....

@rimlogger @tango_octogono there is good argument to be made that these "unified services" were created to monetize them in first place.
Said that, federation as a concept of new era of social networking is good foundation. Hope it sticks and we work out quirks and people learn how to use it.

@DJDarren @Lobstronomosity Oculus has proven that hardware is one thing, but apps is another. And developing and prototyping VR apps is hard, long and expensive. Market is too small for many devs to get super interested in.

peteriskrisjanis,
@peteriskrisjanis@toot.lv avatar

@0x815 @hedge they can already do that, they don't need any particularly new powerful tools there, especially if they are expensive and easy to detect.

peteriskrisjanis,
@peteriskrisjanis@toot.lv avatar

@0x815 comfort of group think. For most people, ease of use is what draws them to social networking. Federation is something they don't grasp that easily, and they don't understand danger of concentrating power on one platform.
I still think it is great Fediverse is here and evolves. It won't attract huge numbers of users, but it might not need to to keep going.

@0x815 @hedge but people fall for it themselves. I mean, they know all facts there.

@SevenSwell @strudel6242 overall it is just very strange - I have Quest 2, Beat Saber is just killer app, but it does not have that much DLC. There are good apps there and here, but still majority of usage is on PC.
It is doing better than I thought it would as niche though. It is also well designed product overall, best thing that came out of all Metaverse fiasco.

Tried Half-Life 2 on Steam Deck - Valve has really gone an extra mile to polish it specially for a device, which feels obviously for them. Menus all have integrated gamepad support, you can change settings in Steam control schema system if needed, and default set feels right at home. Game has been obviously tested and visually look stunning. I also started to use gyro for aiming and shots I pulled despite using gamepad controls and small screen was impressive
