There is a broad understanding for the need to fly less, as the aviation industry accounts for more than 2% of global CO2 emissions. Yet the data centres we depend on for computing already account for more than that, by some estimates up to 4% of global CO2 emissions.

But there are few calls or campaigns to compute less. If anything, it would appear that humankind has decided the best way forward is to compute more.

We are quicky becoming a generation of… generation.

Generate more images and video, stream your television shows, record your meetings, surveil your employees and customers, snap 10 photos of every scene to make sure you get the perfect one. Run it through an AI filter. Save everything in the cloud indefinitely. Keep feeding the generative tools with all that content. Rinse and repeat.

Except don't rinse.

All the while, oblivious governments are subsidising the establishment of more data centres to the detriment of local communities.

The data centres are the factories of our time. But we can not see them or their carbon footprint, so they are very easy to ignore. So we do. If we can stick with calling them clouds they even feel fluffy.

"A 2018 paper by researchers Lofti Belkhir and Ahmed Elmeligi forecast that computing would exceed 14pc of global emissions (based on 2016 levels) by 2040."

That was before generative AI.

« Data processing and storage has such a large carbon footprint for three reasons.

First, servers require electricity to run. Second, they need to be kept cool, which uses more power and also water. Third, the equipment itself is made from expensive resources and needs to be repaired and replaced.

“Computer hardware contains rare earth minerals and all sorts of stuff shipped from all over the world,” says Craven. »

« “One of the reasons why networking emissions are so high is because there is so little desire and capability to switch machines off because it will increase what we call the latency,” says Hussain.

Society demands that everything happens immediately, which means cloud services run constantly. “Everybody keeps everything humming at peak mode, just in case,” adds Hussain. »

A generation of generation. I mean, at least it's catchy, right?

@axbom problems with data giants is also they are way less regulated and doesn't really have natural cap. We can only have certain amount of planes on air. Obsession with get rich schemes with producing something while throwing shit at the wall can scale up way way more.

I'm scrolling through @atrupar's and Acyn's video clips of 's vile spew at CPAC, now in its 2nd hour..

Sorry to be redundant, but if Biden said even ONE thing in any of those clips, it would be over for him.

Yet Trump has duped The News & all too many voters into accepting him "as is."

I don't. At all. And I am not laughing at him. He's lethal. He's toxic. He's malignant.

And the GOP Fascist Party is right there with him.

Donald Trump has been hit with a massive one-two punch in his bank fraud case.

He owes $372 million for lying—and he can't borrow money from any New York bank, frustrating his ability to appeal the judgment.

peteriskrisjanis,

@GottaLaff it is really solid good news, considering how well argued that case was. There is good reason why Trump has avoided courts as hell, he knows he is just winging it, and finally some parts of law has caught up with him.
It also signals every one trying to copy him that while yes, it is rich people aligned world, they will face judgement.

@dougiec3 @GottaLaff I feel being careful about Biden is a good thing, everyone should just go out and vote, however heavy misread of actual sentiment from GOP / tax breaks front media is getting very obvious. They know if Biden will be reelected, he will tear down tax breaks. It is all they care about. They know that trump has taken half of the party hostage and voters not gonna support him this time. And despite everything they tried, Biden is pretty much solid.

The polling industry's probs get far more attention than sloppy reporting on and analysis of the polls.

The DMR says 's support "dipped" by 3 in IA since their last poll, 's taken 2nd , has "fallen" by 3, etc. But the poll has a MOE of +/- 3.7, so these aren't factual statements!

The incentive here is obvious. 'Everything looks pretty much the same as it did in out previous poll' doesn't make for an interesting horse race.

Ironically, one of the reasons LLMs and other systems fail is because they're not sufficiently machinelike. Their creators aspire to some form of generalized intelligence that is not actually happening and substitute bullshit in its place.

For example, a LLM posed with a math question could punt it into a standard calculator subprocess, but it doesn't do that at all and instead produces an answer that "sounds" right as text prediction but is often totally irrelevant.

peteriskrisjanis,
@peteriskrisjanis@toot.lv avatar

@gwynnion ohhh yeah, this, 100%. My point is that marketing people really do not get how people interact with things. They have completely different mind set. That is why they are very eager to copy creative work, but they have no clue or sense how to automate or make more efficient flow of machine human interactions. I don't need two paragraphs of bullshit text when I ask for directions to eating place. This is good example of people outside IT completely missing the picture.

The VC model is a relic, designed to build contrived and manipulated exits, not profitable companies. Alternative financing like shared earnings agreements and rolling funds will flip the script. Builders will retain control and VCs will compete for allocation, not the reverse.

While GOP blocking Ukraine help might help putin in short run, it will revitalise the EU role and make the USA's role in support even smaller.
