Detail from an early-game backdrop for the game I'm making, 'Future Ghost'. A title card will make it unmistakable in-game, but maybe a casual viewer could guess at this setting as well.

The art style is inspired by mid-80s comic books, with adjustments to make it suit a point & click style of exploration.

Meet Wei Song, protagonist of WIP point & click / RPG indie game 'Future Ghost'.

An ageing ex-fighter, Song is primarily driven by survivor's guilt and his personal sense of duty.

Been drawing this guy in one form or another for more than 20 years. Contemplated giving the player a choice between masc Song or fem Song, but it's just too much work...

I have trouble with the elevator pitch for 'Future Ghost'. Here are a few ideas I'm playing with...

  1. A blend of 2D point & click adventure and JRPG, ‘Future Ghost’ is the story of an ageing fighter whose adventures begin with immortality.

  2. ‘Future Ghost’ is a metaphysical scifi narrative adventure blending 2D point & click with JRPG turn-based battles and character progression.

  1. ‘Future Ghost’ tells the story of Wei Song, one of the last arrivals on a colonised Mars, who finds himself immortal and on the wrong side of a powerful magnate.

  2. Haunted by both future and past, ageing fighter Wei Song is thrown into immortality and a struggle to shape the path of humankind in 2D point & click / RPG adventure ‘Future Ghost’.

Opinions and/or advice welcome!

Little partial shot of an interior location the player will visit in metaphysical / 'Future Ghost' (currently in production).

Mid-80s didn't often have this much variety in their background colours, but I need to strike a balance between emulating that style and producing visuals suitable for a point & click type of

Was adding a cheeky little DooM E1M1 reference into the Gauntlet Finales for Soul King.

And then I clicked the wrong button, crashed LDtk and lost like 50 minutes of work. Maybe that's it for me tonight.

No!!! to the loss of work.
Yes... to the DOOM reference.

What making a game currently looks like for me. The setup is humble. The palette is from mid-80s comics. There are 20 or so cartoonish hand-drawn 2D backdrops left to colour; about 1/3 of the total.

My childhood collection is a hodgepodge. Now it's fuel for my own creativity, using Marvel's 1980s printed palette.

'The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe' provided swatches for my ingame visuals (2nd image). Next I'll sample the printed cover colours for updated Steam capsule art, etc.

You don't see the rich red on that 1989 Amazing Spider-Man cover on mid '80s X-Men titles!

Reverse artwork process, in-game environment backdrop for 'Future Ghost': Armn's study. The scene of a flashback - and style play fight - with the protagonist's adoptive brother.

A and 3D printed miniatures of the protagonist/s of 'Future Ghost', Wei Song and the ghost Creed.

Printed on my Ender 3 Pro, the smallest has a base diameter of 2.5cm. Tweaked extensively in from two custom Desktop Hero models. Possible promo item at some point?

Developing methods for digitally replicating features of '80s in 'Future Ghost'. Here is green "printed" over black (the device screen), then OG Thor with red and blue overlays on black for comparison, then the full ingame location.

New to Mastodon, so here's a little self-intro!

I'm Kenn and I like making games.

5 years ago I was game jamming and dropping demos. Then lockdown etc. meant got shelved, but now I'm back in the saddle!

Currently working on style asset for metaphysical 'Future Ghost'. Rewrote the script entirely and still tweaking. The old demo and other things are on Itch & Steam...
