Here she is. It's Eloiz, a key ally in the metaphysical scifi point & click / RPG I'm working on, 'Future Ghost'.

As a first generation Marsborn, Eloiz has high parental expectations to live up to. With a sense of justice that could get her in trouble though, she has to keep many of her wins a secret from her folks.

I'll just leave this one here without saying too much about it.

Death is a big theme of the / I'm working on, 'Future Ghost'. The opens with the following quote from Lucan's 'Pharsalia', one of the few records of Druidic beliefs...

Thus life for ever runs its endless race,
And like a line death but divides the space,
A stop which can but for a moment last,
A point between the future and the past.

On Mars, the deceased represent a priceless resource, without which the planet could not have been colonised or terraformed.

Finished portrait of Ugo the fixer. They're planning a return to fight management, but the underground won't welcome them back any time soon. They'll have to go pro. All they really need is the right fighter...

From the / I'm making, 'Future Ghost'. Ugo is gender fluid, so I'm introducing them for

Transphobia is dead in the future I'm depicting. Let's stamp it out wherever we see it now, too.

Finalizing my efforts to publish my game. Happy to announce that my plans for the 01.01.2024 release developed to be very concrete now. 🤗🥳
I had to find out that bureaucracy is the real deal when you want to publish your first game in Germany. 😬😮‍💨

@Omstero
Oh! What kind of bureaucratic issues did you have to deal with?

That kind of punishing game design would be thoroughly lambasted these days!

Ugo is a key supporting character in the 2D adventure / I'm making, 'Future Ghost'. They're gender fluid, which is why I'm posting about them for

Before Ugo started working as a fixer, they had a successful career as an underground fight promoter and manager. The game's protagonist, Wei Song, was one of their best fighters.

Behind the curtain stuff this time, with my colouring process, mistakes and all.

The pencils for Ugo have now been scanned in and the outlines "inked" as vector art, in red for visibility.

When we meet Ugo in 'Future Ghost', they are working as a fixer, operating in the gaps and grey areas where the Dome City police can't or won't help. Most of Ugo's clients are Earthborn. Ugo would tell you they do it for the money, but I'm not so sure that's all there is to it.

I've had a bit of a taste for today. Out of all oldschool it's probably my favorite. Using modern ports like NBlood, it still holds up.

For its time it has an amazing amount of reactivity. Explosions push objects all over the place, props in the map can break, small chunks fly around wildly.

It's those little interactions that really make games for me.

Blood gameplay The very beginning of the game. The player steps out of the doors of a mausoleum and is confronted by two zombies. Stepping back through the door at the right time, causes the zombies to be crushed by the door as they chase the player.

I've been considering getting this on GOG, to play on my PS Vita.

pineboxgames,
@pineboxgames@mastodon.social avatar

@mezz
In other Vita ports mouse movement is often assigned to either the right stick or the touch screen, sometimes both. If I end up getting Blood, I'll let you know what they've done in that instance!

@mezz
Yep, it's a homebrew port. There are a lot of those being released for the Vita these days!

It's Trans Awareness Week, so what better time to introduce you to Ugo? They're an old friend to the protagonist of 'Future Ghost', Wei Song. Ugo is more gender fluid than trans.

I'll post updates to this image with more details about Ugo as the week progresses. For now, the pencil linework and initial shadows.

Remember, trans rights are human rights!

Pretty basic setup. It does the job, though.

The cars in 'Future Ghost' are of a streamlined retro-futuristic design, many featuring UV-resistant, shatter-safe Mars Glass roof domes.

Mars has 1/3 the Earth's gravity and I want my game's protagonist to have a more interesting and heroic "run" animation than a low-key moon walk "hop".

Thank you to everyone who workshopped this "run" (gallop?) cycle with me, which here on Mastodon means @spinning_bird . Any additional input will be gratefully received.

Have you ever noticed how there doesn't seem to be any difference in gravity in TV, movies and games set on Mars? People's gait really should be quite different in such a setting, as the red planet has only about 1/3 of the Earth's gravity.

Here's a simulation from a scientific paper I found while researching this topic for 'Future Ghost'. Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3327825/

Been thinking about the idea of fem and masc versions of 'Future Ghost'´s protagonist, Wei Song. Here's a mockup of Fem Song based on a female character from an earlier version of the game, alongside the male Song as he appears now.

Practically speaking, it's unlikely I'll be able to give players the option of Fem Song and Masc Song, unfortunately... Maybe a different female protagonist in an "epilogue" type DLC...

Hi! I'm Kenn, and I'm making a video game.

It's currently 6 to 12 months off completion, at a generous estimate. It's a narrative-driven game, a metaphysical scifi 2D point & click adventure with turn-based battles, presented in a graphical style that evokes mid-80s comic print. It's called 'Future Ghost'.

Besides that, I'm a dad, a husband, and a teacher in my day job.

Nice to meet you!

Time for a bit of lore from the metaphysical I'm making, 'Future Ghost'.

On the bookshelf here, which belongs to the protagonist's adoptive brother, is an action figure. This character's name is Panjiaman. When the Earth's governments unified, Panjiaman was created as part of a campaign to sell the idea to the public. This highly collectable Panjiaman figure is missing its cape.

Before & after of the art style for my 'Future Ghost'.

A demo in the original style is available on Steam, but it's more like an outdated prototype now, apart from the key gameplay elements. I don't recommend playing it, really.

Some detail from one of the residents' rooms at the Arsia Elders' Quarters, and the whole room with its animated feature wall, from 'Future Ghost'.

This is the only environment where I've tried to replicate the 80s colour offset printing errors that seem to have especially affected reds for some reason.
