This really got to me.

I have spent weeks researching and writing the 6 pages long script for my latest 25 minute video, which I have spent many days editing to get it to the quality you can now enjoy on YouTube.

I am not payed by anyone to do this, but I do it because I have a dream of building a business as a political commentator on YouTube.

I released the video 12 hours ago, and already two people have shared pirate links to the video here on Mastodon through the…

The German Federal Court of Justice has ruled that ad-blocking is not illegal. https://www.zeit.de/digital/internet/2018-04/adblocker-urteil-bgh-springer-adblock-plus

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@taatm @theseeduneed @mc @randahl I don't think so, simply because Invidious doesn't actually host YouTube videos (“packages them as someone else's”); it rather streams them, acting as a proxy (otherwise, operating an Invidious server would be infinitely expensive). This is very similar to VPN services blocking ads (such as Mullvad and ProtonVPN, I think). Also, the court verdict wasn't really about the private use of ad-blockers, but about providing ad-blocking software to the general public. 🤷

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jbaty @kev Yeah, but I do think every article should have an OpenGraph thumbnail. Of course, it doesn't have to be a photo at all, but could just be a well-designed graphic containing the article's title text and the blog's logo or author's profile picture, just like @robb has implemented it: https://rknight.me/blog/generating-and-caching-open-graph-images-with-eleventy

In comparison, this is what an article without a thumbnail may end up looking like, for example when the client expects an image but can't find one and therefore uses the favicon:

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@spydon In 2020, the Hanover District Court had ordered the telecommunications surveillance of a Tutanota mailbox, and the public prosecutor's office had also applied for a penalty payment and preventive detention against the managing director of Tutanota. However, Tutanota lodged an appeal against all of this, and the regional court cancelled the district court's surveillance order entirely. Also, there are no gag orders under German law.

@spydon In June 2019, @Curia ruled that e-mail services are not telecomunication providers, meaning they cannot be subjected to telecommunication surveillance. Before that, Itzehoe District Court had forced Tutanota to forward certain incoming unencrypted e-mails (directed to inboxes of suspected criminals) to law enforcement. End-to-end encrypted e-mails had not been affected at any point, though.

@Tutanota One suggestion: It took me far too long to understand what the button labeled 19 in the top right means. It takes you back to today's calendar view (which is a very useful feature), but

a) I usually don't know today's date in the first place

b) it doesn't provide any feedback when today's calendar view is already open.

Possible improvements:

  1. Change the label to just “Today”.
  2. Disable the button when today's calendar view is already open.
  3. Provide a tooltip.

https://proton.me/blog/proton-vs-tuta-encryption

Proton takes a moment to address some concerns, point-by-point, of people comparing it to Tutanota.
This article focuses largely on the encryption, and some misinformation about Protons practices.

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@Theeo123 Proton's article also isn't entirely honest, it says that Tuta claim that the proprietary nature of Tuta's encryption makes it more secure than Proton's open encryption.

  1. Tuta relies on the Signal Protocol, which is not proprietary. No clue why Tuta didn't mention that in their own article, though.

  2. Tuta called out PGP for its lack of subject encryption and Perfect Forward Secrecy.

  3. Proton ignore that Tuta's article is largely about Switzerland in general, not just Proton.

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@Theeo123 Do you have examples for that? Proton only referred to Tuta's blog article, and I don't use Reddit very frequently. 🤷
