So, hey, asking for a friend, but has anyone written stuff about caring for aging parents from the perspective of a neurodiverse son/daughter/enby?

(it me. the friend is me.)

playinprogress,

@neurovagrant not that I am aware of but I'll be watching this thread because this is also me

playinprogress,

@neurovagrant Thank you!

Ah, and because this is also possibly relevant to , c&p of a toot f mine from a few days ago:

I am becoming a bit frustrated with the lack of resources about drawing animals other than mammals or birds. Can anyone here recommend anything that goes further than just the normal Dynamic Sketching classes? Books, websites, videos, anything?

I mean cats are cool and all but so are , & , know what I mean?

boosts welcome!

playinprogress,

@futurebird ha, that Maeterlink quote sounds very "systems thinking before systems thinking" - is that true of him in general?

Sometimes I remember that in the 90s it was common to see (and hear!) low-altitude flyovers of military fighter jets in East Germany, which would be so weird happening today. It’s just not a thing anymore, thankfully, because sonic booms from that are not fun.

playinprogress,

@esther Was a thing in West Germany too, I lived somewhere on the flight path between the US/NATO bases in Rammstein and Heidelberg.

That military air traffic is a lot less now, esp. with the fighter jets, but we still get regular military helicopter flyovers.

And yeah, it does feel quite weird. A reminder that geopolitics is actually happening in/about the same world I live in, not just on the other side of a screen or serialized in a newspaper.

days 39-40 of my of drawing animals. I continued working on some watercolors and more intentionally to be finished stuff - with the result that except for the elephants that were actually finished at this point, the rest is still languishing in my room in the same state like, 2 weeks or so later. Gah. I hope I'll have the energy to actually finish them this week!

I started the challenge here in January: https://mastodon.art/@playinprogress/109699531519354873

a drawing of two elephants with the trunks interacting, drawn in black ink and white gouache, on light brown paper
a sketch of a wasp drawn in dark brown felt tip pen on light brown paper
a watercolor or rather gouache drawing on light brown paper of a light grey egret in flight, seen from the side, with the wings stretched out

playinprogress,

on days 61 & 63 of I finished some of the watercolors I had started on day 39 (https://mastodon.art/@playinprogress/110017016364567217 ).

This and were very satisfying to finish, and I learned a lot from them. In fact I learned so much that I immediately had the urge to start over with new versions or very similar images at least, but did not yet get around to that. So many things!

a closeup drawing of a wasp in black ink on brown paper, with some lines of the underdrawing in brown ink still visible
a watercolor on brown paper of a predominantly green and blue frog with orange eyes and hands and feet walking along a very mossy green branch

playinprogress,

on day 62 of I drew a bunch more goldfish, trying to find image references with poses other than a straight profile. I still want to draw more :)

playinprogress,
playinprogress,

on days 66 & 67 of drawing animals I drew a bunch of frogs. frogs are cool, and can do funny things with their legs. And their tongues, still need to study frog range of movement and frog tongue action at some point ...

a page with four sketches of frogs in black ink

playinprogress,
playinprogress,

I spent days 71 & 72 of drawing animals :)

a page with four ink sketches of lizards in various poses. in the upper left corner a handwritten note saying 4.4.2023, 71/100 Days of Drawing Animals
a page with three pen and ink sketches of lizards in various poses, the one in the upper left corner a bit larger than the others and showing a lizard in the hand of a human. above that a handwritten note saying 5.4.2023, 72/100 Days of Drawing Animals

interrupting my usual (attempt at a) strictly chronological order of posting drawings because is still going on so the Vertebrae have to take a backseat for now. Instead I present to you these charming lil , which were days 79 & 80 of drawing animals respectively :)

a horizontal A4 page with a sketch of two rather hairy spiders in black pen and brush pen

playinprogress,

also, this couple of flies, or day 83 of

playinprogress,

most of my fun I had with Octopoi though! Such endless variety of forms, so much to learn from drawing them :)

(These were days 81-84 of my 100 days of drawing animals.)

an ink drawing in black lines and some dark grey wash in landscape format of three octopoi
a drawing in brown pen in landscape format of three octopoi
a drawing in brown pen in landscape format of three octopoi

playinprogress,

...and the last page of octopoi.

playinprogress,

some of the vertebrates that I had skipped posting in favor of invertepartying - these were days 75, 76 & 78 of drawing

a page with sketches in brown felt tip pen of cats in various poses
a page with four sketches of puffins in black ink

playinprogress,

day 77 of I spent with some - they are so much fun to draw it almost feels like cheating. With those fancy patterns they make my drawing look good for me without me even having to think/design much of anything. I can just coast on the beauty of the tiger 🙃

But also, whenever I draw animals with interesting patterns I get an itch to dive deeper into Gregory Bateson's writings on pattern formation in nature 🤓

four studies of tigers' heads in various poses, angles and expressions, done in black ink

playinprogress,

For my original plan was to do a study of a marine animal every day, and then turn that animal into a humanoid somehow. Alas, that turned out to be much trickier and my energy esp. much lower than expected, so my mermaids are only a bunch of very scraggly ballpoint sketches so far. But the marina animal studies actually did happen, so are some hermit . Simultaneously day 85 of .

playinprogress,

Some sea for my 86th day of drawing animals as well as

playinprogress,

on day 87 of drawing animals I was tired and completely underestimated how hard giant would be to draw for me. I am still a bit confused about it. Might try them again some time when I am more awake, maybe that really was the thing that tripped me up. Still, I did not falter! And still sticking with the marine theme for .

playinprogress,

on day 88 of drawing animals I maybe stretched the definition of "marine animal" for a bit, but I just really felt like drawing , and these Marine Iguanas dive and feed underwater. The sketches on the left side of the page are all of these guys moving under water. And they have the best faces and claws! I might have to do them a bunch more. Clawssssssssssss.

playinprogress,

some sea horses for day 89 of :)

playinprogress,

on day 90 of , still honoring , I finally drew some manatees! I'd been wanting to draw them for much too long. 10/10 would do again. Had fun playing around with re-wetting the ink of my pens & using a bit of wash. Sharp dry ink lines feel less appropriate for catching the diffuse light under water.

playinprogress,

on day 91 of I had a brad brain day and felt unable to make a decision, but I still wanted to honor , so I just drew a random assortment of . And because many pictures on Unsplash are really hastily titled or described if at all, I have no idea what kind of fish these are!

But I am happy with using the blue toned paper for underwater things, works better imho than the ink washes I experimented with the day before.
