@wdh @jef @jwz My local is “Berliner Schrauben”. I go there with a sample or a description of what I want and they suck their teeth and shake their head then go “out the back” to emerge five minutes later with exactly what I need. Often they even charge me the buck.

Here’s a big secret that people don’t want you to know. If nobody is able to give you clarity about the scope and scale of a request, sometimes that means you get to decide. It’s really cool when that happens. Don’t waste it.

@polotek @jrconlin You are correct, and the thing to do is try and constrain the scope to “one point”. There will be fixes that are smaller, there will be things that blow up due to unknown unknowns but on average, every chunk of value you deliver will be “one point” (in practice something like 2-3 “ideal engineering days”.) If you build a reputation for delivering on this cadence that’s how you gain trust, including forbearance when things go south.

I don't use my iCloud address. A lot of idiots mistake it for theirs.

Bank of America did not validate the email address before associating it with another person's bank account. I regularly get private banking emails for that person. I've tried over the last two years to contact BoA Customer Service, Fraud, and the suggested abuse@ email address. I've CCed various managers that work in IT there. At this point I can't tell if it's incompetence or malice that they can't stop emailing me.

Thinking about this, can you imagine the scale of the data centres you’d need to power a GPT-4-level Siri for every single iOS, iPadOS and macOS user on the planet? They basically have to do it on device.

We adopted a super sweet 8 month old pup from a shelter two weeks ago and were convinced he was a Rottie-Shepherd mix. Just got the DNA results back, and, through his genes are primarily "mutt," the rest of the results have us going 😳

I can't fathom that this still hasn't been fixed. It's not as if Xcode has a teeny tiny user base and this is an obscure edge case. Every single Swift developer experiences this all the time. It's our IDE failing to communicate whether our codebase could compile or not. That's kind of a biggie.

@simonbs God wouldn’t you love an open-mic question and answer session at WWDC. Maybe you could get @gruber to ask why they’re adding AI features to their IDE that already can’t reliably tell you if your code compiles or not.

One thing that drives me batty is UI affordances that assume the user is new to the platform, not new to the account.

Example: Every time I hit the AWS console in a client account I'm treated to a bunch of "next next next next done" clicks about how it work.

It seems like macOS/iOS deliberately and per policy clears your cut buffer after you paste into a password field.

Am I holding something wrong or is this the most egregious violation of the principle of least astonishment and the stupidest design decision in the history of password reset flows that has personally fucked me at least three times?

@ajs iCloud Keychain/Mac/iOS Settings “Passwords” app. I copy from there, paste once into a password field, then my cut buffer is blank.
