Looks like I get to go another round with Air Canada to get compensation for a multi-time delayed flight that was finally cancelled.

In round 1 they called the issue a safety problem with the plane, which thus excuses them from compensating passengers.

Wait until their hear that their captain told all passengers that it wasn’t a safety issue — that the plane could fly — just a mechanical issue that had nothing at all to do with the plane operating safely.

Looking like I’m going to have to bail on my current web hosting service because they renew at too steep a price than I can afford for a little blog site and two domains.

I keep seeing HostGator, inmotion and DreamHost show up as well-rated sites with really affordable (introduction) packages.

Does anyone have any experience with any of those services? Good/bad/ugly?

Does anyone use a wireless charging pad that you’ve done any troubleshooting with?

I have a Nanami Fast Charging pad that has worked no problem the maybe dozen times I’ve used it, but last night my phone kept waking up more than once a per minute when charging on the pad.

Any ideas how to solve the issue?

Not a desperate problem, as I’ve gotten by for decades by just plugging my phones into a charging cable. But it’s a weird issue and the wireless pad would be nice to use if possible.

Went a week without shaving, which is almost unprecedented.

My daughter has wanted me to grow a beard, but I find just days in starts getting uncomfortably itchy.

My wife suggested I could shave it down to a goatee today and then maybe off tomorrow, just to see how they look.

Tonight the goatee just rated an “it needs to grow in more”. Which, I mean a) Of course and b) I’m not sure I have the patience for.

Hey, #iPhone types:

My wife and kid and I all have iPhones. Been talking in blue bubbles for years.

We just spent a week visiting friends in Florida, and got temporary SIM cards with T-Mobile for the week. For that stretch we had green bubbles with each other.

Why?

Also, we’re back in Toronto now and swapped back to our native SIM cards and… still green bubbles with each other.

I don’t care aesthetically or blah, strictly wondering what tech thing has caused this.

Any insight?

Can anyone tell me what a nominal cost is for annual website domain renewal and hosting combined?

It’s for my site, reayjespersen.com.

Extremely light stuff, mostly blogs with some photo galleries included. No heavy lifting or streaming needs.

I’m currently with A2, have been for a year (or two?) but just got hit for some huge, erroneous charge for way, WAY more than I need.

I’m talking with them to remedy that, but in case there’s no practical option, I need to find it a new home fast.

Kiddo sounded surprised at how small the Lombardi Trophy was when it was being presented tonight.

Fair point, given how big a deal the Super Bowl is.

I was reminded how much bigger the Grey Cup is. And also how it’s almost 60 years older than the Lombardi.

The problematic cost of our ISP came up again tonight.

I verified with a couple of speed checks that were getting download speeds of about 20X slower than the “up to” 1 Gbps we’re paying for. Yet still make it work.

Sadly, this company doesn’t offer much of a price reduction for way slower service caps. But others do. (1/3 the speed cap for 1/3 the current price? What a crazy idea!) So I’m pretty sure there’s a new ISP in our near future.

I was reminded about a distinct pet peeve I have in movies and TV shows:

I played the cello for 8-9 years in grade school, and it quickly became really obvious when someone on the screen wasn’t playing what we were hearing.
But not even just when it’s done well, which bothers me but I get (what actors also happen to be a good violinist, etc.?), but even when it’s bad.
The bowing is wrong, they’re on different strings when you hear just one, etc.

I occasionally dabble tiny bits in programming.

Learned a bit of Fortran and a chunk of BASIC in high school (because I’m that old), and did some quick, word-based games in the latter.

More recently dipped a toe into Python when my tween was into it re: Robotics club at school. Even with basically an introduction to it, I appreciated its compact, efficient formatting.

Then I heard that Rust is more efficient and runs faster than Python? My curiosity got the better of me and I grabbed this.

Something I encounter occasionally in a story and have yet to come up with an elegant way of describing: What would you call what this woman is doing, with her hand and head in particular?

“She rested her head on her open hand, arm raised, elbow propped on the table” is agonizingly verbose for such a common, casual thing. But cutting it down opens it up to ambiguity.

Is that action called something specific?
Suggestions for re-phrasing?

I’m delighted to inform you that now that there’s finally enough room on the credit card, AND enough collected in some physical paycheques I still get from gig work, to finally get a new laptop… we’re soon visiting friends in the U.S. for a week and we just found out my wife and daughter aren’t getting all iOS updates any more so they should really get newer phones ASAP.

Working theory that the universe wants me to not have a remotely current or efficient or reliably operating laptop.
