@APBBlue I’ve discovered I get worked up a lot and quickly about a sudden, large change in plans, particularly when it involves now being with people people when I was ready for a stretch of not being with people. (There’s a tiny chance my introversion has deepened as I’ve gotten older).

On the upside, it almost always works out just fine and I have a genuinely good time. But that first impact when I hear about the change is big.

All of which is to say, hope it goes well for you.

When my son was little I would tuck him into bed then lie on the floor in his bedroom and count to 1,000 to myself before leaving. It was usually enough to make sure he fell asleep.

@monkeyborg I did the counting thing as well getting my daughter to bed when she was younger. But no joke it usually turned into me basically counting sheep and I’d fall asleep, sometimes before she did.

I was surprised to see so many Maple Leafs fans in the Tampa Bay arena tonight, and my wife had a theory that I just verified:

It’s literally cheaper right now for someone in Toronto to fly to Tampa Bay, get a good seat for the game (first section closest to the ice), and stay in a good hotel… than it is to get one game ticket in the same area of the arena in Toronto.

We know HBO tried to "buy out" JKR from the Harry Potter films so they could make more of them with the original actors, but failed because she demanded "ridiculous" money. I wonder if Scholastic did the same with the books.

And if so, did they send her a colorful flier on magazine paper making the idea seem awesome?

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@nyquildotorg It’s hard to imagine someone being a literal billionaire but asking for what even a movie studio thinks is a ridiculous sum beyond that insane wealth.

A thousand million dollars, and she wants so much more beyond that that a studio used to throwing around nine figures to make a single movie is balking at her price.

Unreal.

Republicans passed a bill in Texas to end countywide-voting, which allows voters to choose polling locations that are convenient or have short lines, and a bill allowing the state to take over county election administration on flimsy pretexts.

If signed into law, the fix is in. Republicans will close locations in opposition areas to engineer impossibly long lines for democrats, but keep voting fast and easy for Republicans.

@alexwild What never ceases to amaze me is how Republicans can at once sincerely be all Rah Rah The U.S. Is The Bastion Of Democracy, yet then the next moment do shit like this that is directly the opposite of being in a democracy.

Both can’t be true at the same time, you big dummies. Either let everyone vote fairly and accept the results as a democracy or skew the playing field to help your team to win. Make a choice of those two and own it, but you can’t have it both ways.

    Does anyone who records vocal audio have any thoughts on why my waveform amplitude seems so small on the recording software?

    I’m having to turn the interface gain to almost max just to capture even that.

    The presets I’m using in Audacity are in line with tutorials I’ve seen, so it’s not that.

    And I know it’s not which USB port the interface is connected to on my laptop. But aside from that, maybe the mic itself (a Shure SM-58)? Maybe the cabling or a connection somewhere?

    reay,
    @reay@mastodon.social avatar

    @thebishopgame Ok, so update: Realized I hadn’t installed the driver for the UR12. Straight-forward, seemed to take it ok, all good.

    And now it’s recording as more sensitive than it had been, though still oddly low.

    With the gain at zero, there’s literally no levels registering on the input. You can hear it on the playback, but very faintly.

    Gain cranked half way, I was peaking at around -40dB.

    Gain at max, peaking at -12. That was too much, even with headphones pretty low.

    reay,
    @reay@mastodon.social avatar

    @thebishopgame So yeah, definitely more sensitive with the driver installed, but I’m still having to put the gain up around half way to get it into a decent playback volume.

    And for what it’s worth, even with gain maxed out and the volume too high, the wave pattern amplitude on the visual is still really small compared to what I’ve seen in every tutorial video, with them just talking casually. 🤔

    There are times when the Toronto Transit Commission’s Trip Planner feature works well.

    And then there are times when its first result is suggesting you can walk 790 metres (half a mile) in 10 minutes. 🤔

    reay,
    @reay@mastodon.social avatar

    @apLundell Realized the issue with the walking distance time estimate. I mis-typed the address. 3730, not 3070 as I had it.

    I was wondering in retrospect why it was saying it was only 800-ish metres away, which is about 8 city blocks. It's 3.3 km (33-ish blocks) from my place.

    Waaaay less confusing now.

    There are times I feel extra not smart.

    reay,
    @reay@mastodon.social avatar

    @apLundell Oh, for sure. I’m a slow walker. But I should’ve twigged in earlier to the fact that I’m not THAT slow, and realized I made a manual error somewhere.

    Like, yeah, I can walk 8 city blocks in about ten minutes. 🙄

    Next VPN question: Does anyone a) access Masto with a VPN running, and b) do you use the Tooot app to (try to) do so?

    I’m putting a VPN through some tests and it seems to do well overall but I couldn’t load anything on Tooot from any timelines.

    The second I turned off the VPN, my timelines loaded. But I’m not yet clear on if that was an app issue or if somehow Masto itself (or at least the .social instance) doesn’t jibe well with VPNs.

    Anyone got any insight?
