Read an article today about why Americans think alcohol has health benefits and it's apparently another "well the French are healthy and they do X so it's healthy to do X."

So here's your periodic reminder that France (and Italy, and Sweden, and Japan, and basically every country you've seen in a "this country is so healthy, what's their secret?" headline) has universal health care.

The secret is access to health care. It's always access to health care.

@Annalee And further to that point, they’ve likely got other “socialist” support in effect.

Denmark has very heavy taxes on its citizens but they’re VERY well covered.

Having a child?
Parents get a combined 52 weeks of leave.

Want to change jobs? Your bills are covered to let you take time to decide.

If anyone, politician or otherwise, tells you socialism doesn’t work or isn’t in your best interest, they’re either uninformed (educate them) or lying (ask yourself why).

@Mrfunkedude Plans today: Get some voice over demos down and hopefully start getting them posted in places that may be looking for that kind of sound for their gigs.

Related: Can anyone who knows V.O. work clarify what I'd call fiction audio book reading but without character voices? It seems there's audio book acting work (with voices) or there's narration of non-fiction and corporate straight-talk. But what about just reading fiction "straight"?

The worst thing about Trump besides Trump is that he is actually the clown he acts like he is..

It's not even a character but he's for real that uh...

'Misinformed' and his ego is almost bigger than the ever expanding universe :amaze:

Can't believe that clown was president :pudding_verified:

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@stux That's part of my head-shaking about the whole thing.
He IS that guy.
He's not playing a part.
He's literally a guy who will look straight at the sun and thinks putting bleach in your body is a practical way to beat a pandemic and thinks passing a cognitive test means he's been verified as brilliant.

Even considering bringing back a former president so stupid he made people miss having George W Bush in charge should give all Republicans pause to reconsider what they're doing.

Among reasons I'm not a fan of Wikipedia: Editors can change things and it won't get changed back until another editor catches it.

Wikipedia currently, as of this writing and evidently on my laptop browser but not my mobile browser, have Ron DeSantis listed as the 47th president of the U.S. and present for two terms:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_presidents_of_the_United_States

Not sure if I can flag this kind of bullshittery, but yeah, always, ALWAYS take info on Wikipedia with a big grain of salt.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

As I went into the page to see if there was a way I could flag it for editing, the public track of edits to had someone else citing the addition of DeSantis (they chalked it up to being hacked) and it was immediately removed.

Still, though... be really careful with assuming what you read where is truth, y'all.

But I'm testing the waters of voice over work and wasn't sure if I should make a whole other website for that or tack it onto my existing site.

Irked that Tucker Carlson will almost certainly land on his feet after being directly involved in the lies about the election that just cost Fox almost $800 million.

“Hey, weren’t you one of the talking heads that lied about the 2020 election that ultimately cost the company you worked for $780-something million?”

“Yes.”

So now other states are trying to lure Disney away from Florida because of the huge hassle with DeSantis imposing his will on the state (as… y’know… elected officials are voted in to do 🙄).

Can you imagine if that actually happened?

Disney pulls in 20 million people who spend $2.2 billion a year.

That would suddenly disappear from Florida.

… win?

Republicans passed a bill in Texas to end countywide-voting, which allows voters to choose polling locations that are convenient or have short lines, and a bill allowing the state to take over county election administration on flimsy pretexts.

If signed into law, the fix is in. Republicans will close locations in opposition areas to engineer impossibly long lines for democrats, but keep voting fast and easy for Republicans.

@alexwild What never ceases to amaze me is how Republicans can at once sincerely be all Rah Rah The U.S. Is The Bastion Of Democracy, yet then the next moment do shit like this that is directly the opposite of being in a democracy.

Both can’t be true at the same time, you big dummies. Either let everyone vote fairly and accept the results as a democracy or skew the playing field to help your team to win. Make a choice of those two and own it, but you can’t have it both ways.

@APBBlue I’ve discovered I get worked up a lot and quickly about a sudden, large change in plans, particularly when it involves now being with people people when I was ready for a stretch of not being with people. (There’s a tiny chance my introversion has deepened as I’ve gotten older).

On the upside, it almost always works out just fine and I have a genuinely good time. But that first impact when I hear about the change is big.

All of which is to say, hope it goes well for you.

When my son was little I would tuck him into bed then lie on the floor in his bedroom and count to 1,000 to myself before leaving. It was usually enough to make sure he fell asleep.

@monkeyborg I did the counting thing as well getting my daughter to bed when she was younger. But no joke it usually turned into me basically counting sheep and I’d fall asleep, sometimes before she did.

Next VPN question: Does anyone a) access Masto with a VPN running, and b) do you use the Tooot app to (try to) do so?

I’m putting a VPN through some tests and it seems to do well overall but I couldn’t load anything on Tooot from any timelines.

The second I turned off the VPN, my timelines loaded. But I’m not yet clear on if that was an app issue or if somehow Masto itself (or at least the .social instance) doesn’t jibe well with VPNs.

Anyone got any insight?

I was surprised to see so many Maple Leafs fans in the Tampa Bay arena tonight, and my wife had a theory that I just verified:

It’s literally cheaper right now for someone in Toronto to fly to Tampa Bay, get a good seat for the game (first section closest to the ice), and stay in a good hotel… than it is to get one game ticket in the same area of the arena in Toronto.

There are times when the Toronto Transit Commission’s Trip Planner feature works well.

And then there are times when its first result is suggesting you can walk 790 metres (half a mile) in 10 minutes. 🤔

@apLundell Oh, for sure. I’m a slow walker. But I should’ve twigged in earlier to the fact that I’m not THAT slow, and realized I made a manual error somewhere.

Like, yeah, I can walk 8 city blocks in about ten minutes. 🙄
