rewarp, to linux

These are several levels of privilege at play when someone complains about the nerdiness and Linux geekery levels here.

But when I remember my teenage years where I was so poor Linux and the FOSS tools were the only legal option because it was free, and I got good at it because it was made to include people like me; seeing some dipshit first worlder who never had to survive on RM 2.80 (USD 0.50 approximately) a day opine on how Linux users are insufferable does annoy me quite greatly.

Me stating the OS I use is a sign of gratitude and pride. That despite and because of how I started off, I'm able to feed myself now because of the FOSS community. As insufferable as they may be to you, at least they helped me when I needed it.

In regards to the Reddit enshittification, perhaps the anime community would like to try https://lemmy.ml/c/anime

I am astounded by what Apple users are willing to put up with.

Perfectly functional MacBook Pro from 2015 that probably cost more than I make in half a year after adjusting for inflation, is rendered unusable because the keyboard is riveted in, and with each key dying because the previous owner was using it for heavy writing, became less and less usable.

The cost of repair alone and effort would be better spent on buying another laptop second hand instead.

Considering I fix these laptops I receive to give away to folks around me usually at my own cost, this is an unsustainable expense, and I am not about to give such garbage to people and expect them to be grateful just because it's free for them.

I am no branding expert, but calling your opponents an "illegal shadow library" makes you sound like a villain, and elevates your opponents to protagonists, in an anime series like Read or Die.

I stopped watching LTT when I figured Linus not knowing how to download code using git clone but instead complained about having to download code from GitHub while being an arrogant know-it-all techbro who put himself in a situation to download out of tree patches for whatever Linux distro he was testing was frankly ludicrous for a tech site, because it was indicative that other things were being overlooked.

Gamers Nexus summary shows that is very much too true, and worse.

White man @MarkRNay
writes to tell me he has blocked me because I say we should kill Moderna's CEO who is killing people by price gouging using an essential life-saving COVID-19 vaccine.

I assume this means he is siding with a mass murdering capitalist pig and wants me to tell all my friends.

Our fucking piece of shit government going to war over rainbow coloured watches.

Hayak previously said the watches were seized by the Home Ministry’s Regulatory and Enforcement Division using the Printing Presses and Publications Act.

Apparently watches are covered under media publications.

Taking an extremely large paycut to work as an anticapitalist contractor for an NGO has its perks, but not the usual ones you are thinking of.

Right now, it is mainly seeing a techbro from one of the megacorps lowkey panicking because he is unable to use his humungous reputation alone to get state money approval to buy his shitty hardware, because I have dismembered their hardware so thoroughly, he is trying to pretend he is a time traveller and is rewriting the purpose of the proposal so the hardware is magically the only solution to a problem he invented.

It is me. The anarchist you can never buy. I live on feasting upon the tears of the rich. It's one of my only remaining pleasures from working life.

I own a HP LaserJet Pro M12a, and the most confounding thing about it is, outside of Ubuntu, it is seemingly unusable.

Windows? No drivers, not even a website for driver downloads.

openSUSE Tumbleweed using HPLIP? Doesn't exist.

Get the foo2zjs PPD file in a Debian package, seemingly the only place left in the universe to retrieve it? Printer refuses to work as if out of principle alone.

Ubuntu virtual machine with USB passthrough, it Just Works™️. The cursed thing is installed into its subsystems as if you had Miles O'Brien, the most important person in Starfleet history working on your machine.

It was faster downloading Ubuntu 23.04 and installing it as a virtual machine than trying to get it working natively.

An interesting end to the night. My rather reliable up to this point UPS from the company Neuropower, just had a spectacular death.

Lots of sparks and burns within the casing. It shut itself off, then inexplicably turned itself on moments later to burn some more until it appeared to burn itself to death. Seems properly sealed, but I'll probably place it somewhere safe for a year before disassembly and sending the lead acid battery for proper disposal.

Unless of course I become bored and just want to feel something.

One thing I realised about the racist-transphobic funding wizard game is I figure out which streamers are either aware about the whole genocidal situation being cooked up by the far-right, or have trans friends telling them about the antisemitic TERF author.

Don't feel too bad about unsubscribing from some people. The chat reflects the streamer, and vice versa after all.

For those looking for a Bandcamp alternative, I propose checking out Magnatune.

I saved up enough money a few years ago and paid for an unlimited downloads Magnatune account, which promises a 50/50 split with any artists hosting on the platform.

One time payment, use forever (while the site is still running), the end.

http://magnatune.com/

Pretty certain I still haven't even used up that bulk purchase to download and stream every album on that site.

It's me. I binged 3 seasons of Star Trek Lower Decks over the past few days, and did it just so I had enough context at first for the Strange New Worlds crossover, but definitely also because it's so damn addictive.

Chanting "Starfleet! Starfleet! Starfleet" to perk up feels so right.

Lovely comment on #AI tech's priorities.

This means we are currently getting the worst of both worlds from Bing, an AI tool that will refuse to generate a nipple but is supercharging 4chan racists.

I was wondering why my overpowered desktop couldn't suddenly render scenes smoothly from videos. Way out of the loop because my CPU was such a beast handling video decoding, I didn't even realise the occasionally stuttering frames that started creeping in was because GPU decoding of some pretty darn important video formats for AMD had been removed for patent reasons.

Fortunately, there is an easy way to re-enable them.

Every few weeks I meet a system I set up with full disk encryption on luks1, sendiri cari pasal, upgrade it to luks2, then :akasad: when the system doesn't boot.

In an hour of troubleshooting where I get to the verge of reinstalling the system but still myself because that's ludicrously inefficient, I remember luks2 doesn't work with grub and revert all my upgrades. System then merrily boots.

This has happened twice.

I expect my brain to forget about this again in a few weeks so this time I'm reminding myself by writing it down.

Over the next couple of months, your grace period of nice Fediverse will end and a new period of reminders to be aware of people with disabilities using this site will begin. Maybe it has already started?

How you adapt to this is up to you. But I hope you choose the kinder option.

rewarp, to Facebook

Basically, if you were all against the numerous assortment of techbros over the past few months raising brilliant ideas of incorporating advertising into the Fediverse, what in the multiverse do you think Facebook is going to do to the experience here after they start flooding the place with their content?

Was thinking too far ahead for so long, how to pipe websites on a remote system to my local machine's Firefox just to help toggle some router settings, and suddenly I realised I could just have used Lynx, the terminal web browser.

Stripped of everything except html, it's bloody fast too. Too bad it took me years to connect the neurons.

I stopped using Facebook in 2013 and have actively purged all activity associated with that company from my life ever since.

That means today, I don't use WhatsApp or Instagram. Ever.

You think this is even a debate with me?

Last night, as a result of me fiddling with a Blu-Ray audio CD that I received as part of a collection that was destined for the dumpster, I decided to re-read how to play Blu-Ray region locked content on a Linux system again with fresh eyes.

My previous attempt, failed when I got to a page which blocked me from playing my legally acquired with my capitalist tokens Liz and the Blue Bird disc, because my player was apparently not in the right region.

Digging around a bit last night, I found out PC Blu-Ray players are region free by design, so that meant the region-lock error was probably erroneous.

This time, aided by the reliable Arch Wiki at https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Blu-ray

I followed the steps for setting up the environment, and to copy KEYDB.cfg to the right folder, and voila, Liz and the Blue Bird, now playable!
