Winamp is not going open source. Here's what it is doing - and why https://zdnet.com/home-and-office/home-entertainment/winamp-is-not-going-open-source-heres-what-it-is-doing-and-why/ by @sjvn

Yes, I know what the headlines say; Don't believe them. is not going to be

richlv, (edited )
@richlv@mastodon.social avatar

@sjvn @sjvn BTW, maybe it’s possible to let Jack know about Raspberry player (which I found out about recently on Mastodon) - it’s a “more live” fork of Clementine.

https://www.zdnet.com/home-and-office/home-entertainment/these-two-old-school-music-players-for-linux-let-me-fine-tune-my-listening-experience/

Edit: the correct name of the currently active fork is Strawberry, https://www.strawberrymusicplayer.org/ .

richlv,
@richlv@mastodon.social avatar

@sjvn I'm so sorry, with all these forks and fruits and berries I mixed it up...
It's actually Strawberry.

Clementine apparently got abandoned, and Strawberry is a fork of it.

What do you mean by "It is not possible to load single routes, instead of the whole folder"?
Could this be related to your computer OS or similar?

Last Sunday Latvian OSM community (in the massive numbers of two for this event :) ) created streetview images for the Ķīpsala (literally - bale island) region of Riga.

Do you like some remote mapping for relaxation? These fresh images could allow to add a lot of detail.

Hard to imagine a signal that a website is a rugpull more intense than banning users for trying to delete their own posts

https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/stack-overflow-bans-users-en-masse-for-rebelling-against-openai-partnership-users-banned-for-deleting-answers-to-prevent-them-being-used-to-train-chatgpt

Like just incredible "burning the future to power the present" energy here

@mcc …what if we would instead add “OpenAI was not used in preparing this answer as it is considered unreliable” and similar, varying lines?
It’s just stating the fact…

🇵🇸🇺🇦: You can't just invade another country, kill its people, and say it was yours the whole time!

🇵🇸🇷🇺: I reflexively support anyone who's against America.

🇮🇱🇺🇦: Why would I need to form my own opinion if the CIA can do it for me?

What are your interests?

Art Noveau was already mentioned.

If you prefer wooden architecture, left/west bank of Daugava has that.

One could go up the Acadeny of Sciences, there's a viewing platform.

A whole bunch of parks (like the recently renovated Victory Park), botanical garden, zoo...

Riga has a few (sea) beaches.

Or you might be interested in what I do, which is just randomly visiting any region in a city - narrowing down based on interests could help :)

richlv,
@richlv@mastodon.social avatar

@pgronkievitz @travel

Then Museum of the Occupation of Latvia might be of some interest (both locations).

Personally I fancy the Pārdaugava wooden (and other types) buildings more than Art Noveau, but I might be spoiled :)

One recent example is https://www.flickr.com/photos/43794875@N08/53653006492/in/album-72177720316211711/ , although Flickr search has bugs and cannot find most other pics right now :/

A bunch of churches like https://www.flickr.com/photos/43794875@N08/53462936108/in/album-72177720314046527/, too.

If you're in this region, Āgenskalna Market is a rebuilt hipster-y market with food places upstairs. All kinda of stuff, visiting Borščs will get you Ukrainian food and support Ukraine a bit.

https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/97411807

As for architecture, you definitely will want to visit Riga Central Market - the buildings there were originally built as zeppelin hangars (WWI).

Just a construction area, but one could snap a historic portrait at RailBaltica construction sites :)

richlv,
@richlv@mastodon.social avatar

@pgronkievitz @travel Oh, and I don’t have much on food suggestions, but just recalled - can highly recommend Trīs vīri laivā (3VL, Three Men In a Boat) - https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/1923562977 .

These drinks will be served during the Ice-Breaker event and in the six partner bars that are the gathering places for FOSS4GE participants throughout the week.🥂

You can suggest geo-related names for any drink. It doesn't have to be a name that specifies the drink itself.🍾

Hey everyone!

I'm working on a video to see what the Linux community (or at least people who follow me) actually use.

So, I created a little form, hosted on my Nextcloud (hopefully it's up to the task...)

It's only up for 2 days, so don't hesitate to share it around, it will help me "touch grass" and see if my preconceived notions are confirmed, or invalidated!

https://nextcloud.thelinuxexp.com/index.php/apps/forms/s/XQRzMrs8QTtCjDfSyP4koA9o

Of course, it's all anonymous, no personal data, it's just for the purposes of creating the video.

Just noticed today that MacOS puts a little bit of resistance when you are pushing a window towards another, or when you align them on the sides/edges.

Makes it so that it is easy to get your windows aligned or perfectly side-by-side.

Not sure when this first came up, but it is such a nice touch.

richlv,
@richlv@mastodon.social avatar

@Migueldeicaza Right, just that Apple might not be the usability geniuses sometimes people might get the perception they are - on the contrary, I find MacOS to be maddeningly inconsistent and limited, and KDE being ages ahead in UX and functionality :)

Previously I compared to in Latvia.
https://mastodon.social/@richlv/111402843227612917

Ended up on from a website, and it didn't seem to depict reality. Had to compare it with OSM.

Missing major buildings, roads. Incorrect roads (NE one is a mostly a path). And that's ignoring all the detail, available in OSM.

Oh, and that "bar" on the left in Google Maps? That's a spam entry, advertising bar services for events.

Got asked today about navigating someplace with Google Maps.

First image - OpenStreetMap.
Second - GMaps of the same region.

First, there's a massive difference in the amount of available information.
Second is one housename... in two different locations.

Thank you to all the OSM contributors for creating such a wonderful, worldwide map.
