I won’t spoil the conclusion - if you’ve paid attention to alternative OSes for 20+ years it likely won’t be a complete surprise - but I was amused by this intro to a para, early on: “I will pass over OS/2 in silence.” Yes, that’s probably for the best.

@lawfare I was just trying to choose my favourite pull-quote from this excellent and accessible piece, and had just about settled on:

“The fundamental problem is that tech companies dislike spending extra money even more than programmers dislike doing extra work.”

Fun fact (at least in my observation): the word “Shire” appears nowhere in the text of “The Hobbit.”

@desafinado @bookstodon That is fun. And “Hobbiton” only appears once. The book is all about “there”, and then the “back again”.

I couldn't have imagined that a 10000 word Analysis piece about Channel Tunnel through services would become one of my most read blog posts ever

But what else - perhaps in the same style - should I write? Send me your ideas! https://jonworth.eu/what-analysis-would-you-like-to-read-send-me-your-ideas-and-i-will-have-a-go/

@jon Heading back to where I used to live - and where I never tried taking the train very far - I’d be curious about a look at the Baltics. @marisjonovs seems to have tried out the Riga-Vilnius link (which didn’t exist when I left in July) and the questions about how rail competes with buses and air travel in a small population are with inconveniently-oriented infrastructure will be important in years to come.

Is 2024 going to be the year you start working at the @opcw ?

There are several competitions running with application deadlines in January. I’ll make some job-specific posts later but for now have a glance at https://jobs.opcw.org/accueil.aspx?LCID=2057

FAQ: Do I have to know all about ?

A: Not for all jobs! The works for a world free of chemical weapons, but it’s a broad and diverse organisation - many don’t need or expertise.

Wow, @djnavarro you rock.

I am staring at several pages of tables in PDF and trying to figure out how to get it into so I can do something slightly sensible with it and your blog post is a top hit and I say to myself "that name looks familiar" and (with some clunking) - it works with and the UI options you suggest.

Thank you!

Analysis can be tomorrow.

The trilogy bundle has a couple more days to go.

I bought it: it has a few trilogies I’ve started but not finished, a few authors whose other works I’ve loved, and several books I’ve looked at by authors I’ve not read (except in a series).

I started reading @scalzi based on picking up one of his books in a bundle. Fiction bundles let me discover authors and works.

Thanks to @lavietidhar and @aliettedb for drawing me in!

Reading about Nordenskiöld's July 1883 expedition onto the inland ice of . Sleds full of food and equipment pulled across extremely uneven ice by men, sweating from their exertions despite the cold. After 17 days they turn around because of hopeless ice. But Nordenskiöld asks two men to don skis and backpacks to go a little farther still. 1/2

Final stages before submitting a manuscript and getting angry with the journal's citation style that's APA7-but-not-quite-in-a-number-of-small-petty-ways. Checked the stylesheet repository and found that a kind soul has already uploaded a stylesheet for that journal! 🙏 Unfortunately, it was created when the journal had their specially petty version of APA6 so I need to edit it. Okay, fine. And that's how I found that "the kind soul" happens to have exactly the same name as me! 😅 🙈

@rikefranke The Lithuanian campaigns reflects some of the wit and creativity seen in other messaging here. Here is the "Let your money fight" imagery from the Blue/Yellow campaign: an all-blue army-figure in a crouch with a rolled-up 5 Euro note on their shoulder like a portable rocket launcher. (The Lithuanian text is closer to "Send your money to fight".)

As data visualization it is more exploratory than explanatory.
My main conclusions:

rmartinnielsen,
@rmartinnielsen@mastodon.social avatar

@philippsteinkrueger If it doesn’t check back to the original server it probably should because @botsin.space is friendly but atypical and doesn’t necessarily “see” the broader world very accurately.
The pre-filtering stage lets it follow some general interest accounts which have a lot of volume, occasionally have relevant content, but don’t use hashtags on a regular basis. (So it wouldn’t see the content otherwise but the keyword boost in scoring isn’t big enough to not filter.)
