@josiah I mean, we had @jnolis writing about using R in prod at T-mobile 5 (!) years ago! And the context there implies that it's getting hit a bunch, if it's being used to classify customer responses.

I have been having a hard time getting into the habit of checking here. New habits are difficult to develop... So yesterday I

  • followed a bunch more people to populate my timeline better
  • set my browser startup page to my feed here

@grrrck @minecr For another browser alternative, there is https://phanpy.social It also lets you match system settings, and does a decent job of approximating quote toots.

Still waiting on using normal emoji short codes to insert emoji, however.

@minecr @grrrck Yeah, when I mention social media in family conversation, I always use the word "post". If my kids (12, 9, 5) knew that my favorite social media refers to posts as "toots", I'd never hear the end of it.

I hardly ever watch the same movie more than once or read the same book over again. I've always been like this. I can remember text, going through it again seems pointless. This isn't about "spoilers" (I don't even believe in the concept of spoilers) it's more that once I know a story I can tell it to myself all that I want. I don't need to see it again.

But music is different. Music gets better the more you return to it. So, the Fantasia movies are among the few I've watched multiple times.

@futurebird Huh. I used to watch a lot of movies more than once, but now I'm more likely to watch it once, and if I really like the music, buy the soundtrack. Movies with good soundtracks (both lyrical and not) brings me back into the movie, even if I don't remember the exact scene.

The website for the https://www.accelerate23.ca/ conference probably cost an arm and a leg to build but sweet suffering haggis it's giving me motion sickness - every downscroll throws images sideways or enlarges video clips or makes text grow and shrink without any apparent pattern.

@errantscience this reminds me of my days as an Analytical lab Teaching assistant. The students would complain that it was impossible, and I'd have to inform them that we (the TAs) had actually done the experiment (including titrations) the week before.

Probably helped that I had done upper year anal chem lab that was essentially all titrations of different kinds.

I wonder if this is at all related to challenges with moderating an instance of checks notes 200k active accounts? Or with moderating new accounts on the only instance actively promoted in the official apps? :thinking_rotate:

Thankfully we can always defederate! What's that? It's the biggest instance so there are real concerns about a lot of people losing connections? Whodda thunk it!

@futurebird Yep, first encountered it in a graph problem to walk from leaf nodes all the way up the tree to through all the parents.

Have only had to use it a few times since, but definitely like you said: "this is black magic".

@futurebird very tiny desk in the corner of our bedroom, and laptop actually lives on the dresser next to it, and keyboard and mouse are wireless.

The bin has made a big difference in keeping things off the monitor stand and the mouse pad.

@smach this is interesting.

I was actually discussing w/ a woman friend on Facebook about ChatGPT, and one thing they appreciate is that ChatGPT doesn't judge them for not knowing about things, or where to find the previously asked questions / tutorials about how to use or do something.

However, I also think it's telling that OpenAI had to employ people to filter out a ton of really nasty content, like much of the stuff that contributes to women staying out of open software.
