I’m surprised and thrilled that my essay “Horror and Hope in Climate Fiction” has won this year’s #UtopiaAward for nonfiction! Thank you so much to everyone who voted for it! I owe a special debt to authors @dk_mok & @octaviacade, whose stories I analyzed in this essay, as well as Strange Horizons editor @jolantruchng.

I will NOT be giving thanks to the neighbor’s cat, though this would have been a very different essay without them.

How it started / How it’s going

The same field at the rewilding project I volunteer at, 6 months apart. I wish I had a picture from a year ago when it was nothing but invasive Johnson grass & tumbleweeds! Still a lot of work to do, but after sheet mulching, weeding, & planting, it’s coming alive.

A field with rich soil, dotted with grasses. Further back, hundreds of sunflowers below green trees. Still a few tumbleweeds, but many fewer than the first photo.

! STEEL TREE is a science fiction retelling of The Nutcracker that flips the original tale on its head and delves into issues like imperialism, colonialism, and class struggle. It will be out from Android Press December 12th!

👀 The newest #Imagine2200 Editor's Pick story is "When We Are Ruins, Dance on Us" by M Jesuthasan

This story blew my mind the first time I read it! It's from the point of view of the former Supreme Court of Singapore--the building itself! It's a fascinating piece of #ClimateFiction that's both dystopian and hopeful, both grounded and mystical.

I'd love to hear what you think about it.

"The greatest enemy of good climate fiction is the depression of climate science; too much 'doom-and-gloom' will make readers apathetic and bring about the same dark future you are trying to prevent... there has been a rise in creative work to counter the darker tones of dystopian literature. It’s called Solarpunk: a version of cli-fi with better, fairer societies using the disruption of climate change to create positive outcomes."

An essay I wrote about solarpunk and reincarnation is now up at the Solarpunk Station blog!

And be sure to check out the other posts in the "Solarpunk Spirituality" series, if the intersection of those two is something that interests you. Everyone who's written a blog for this series has a little different take on it!

Out now! SOLAR FLARE: Solarpunk Stories from the publisher Zombies Need Brains, LLC contains my story "Walking Through Fog." It's about birth and death, extinction and renewal, in a community that harvests their water from fog harps.

Here's where to find a copy!

Photo of the first page of "Walking Through Fog" by Sarena Ulibarri, page 50 of Solar Flare. A stylized black sun with a white center at the top of the page. Text reads: “Each one is like a little birth,” Malena says, her gaze dancing with wonder along the wires of the fog harps. Dew swells on the wires until each drop slides down, joining with the next and the next, delivered into the trough below. “Thousands of little births, every morning.” She herself is near to bursting like one of those dew drops, ready to welcome our child any day now in a rush of blood and water, pain and joy. She turns to me, smile radiant, and my heart aches at how beautiful she looks with the fog flowing around her. “I see why you like to walk here, Lexy,” she tells me. I lace my fingers with hers and we continue along the hillside, much slower than my usual pace. It isn’t the fog harps that draw me to this place, though it is true they add a strange and surreal beauty to the hillside. It’s the fog itself that I enjoy.

I forgot to put the blurb in the alt text of the cover for MY HEART IS HUMAN, so here it is:

“A sci-fi thriller that takes us into the near future and explores what it means to be human, to find family, and to embrace our full selves. Perfect for fans of Sara Pinsker and Annalee Newitz.” —Rebecca Roanhorse, author of Black Sun
