Hey #FreeBSD peeps,

I'm trying to figure out what GELI stands for. (Just because it's such a cute name, I guess? lol)

I've deduced that it's GEOM_ELI (https://man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=geli&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+14.1-RELEASE+and+Ports&arch=default&format=html), but what's ELI?

(Also, I kinda wish #BSD had man -K (full text search). I need to write a todo to make my own implementation)

@scalzi I just saw Dune 2 last week. It was good; better than Dune 1. But I still prefer David Lynch’s version.

I know David Lynch is hyper critical of his work, but I think the movie is a masterpiece. The sounds, the images, the layers of feelings. Genius.

Can someone here explain why heatpumps are the new hotness? (Sorry.) Despite the hype, all I can discern is that they are just air conditioners that can pump in the other direction ("reverse cycle"), and the thermodynamics is poorly explained in the popular literature. Why are they suddenly the thing that can save the world? What am I missing?

My degree is in physics. I can handle the truth.

@robpike I’m probably the only naysayer in the replies; I installed a heat pump around 7 years ago. I have yearly service because they don’t work. When they do work they don’t get cold enough or hot enough. I also have to get them cleaned out frequently due to mold growth. I have spent more on service visit fees than I would care to add up.)

(Population size = 1. lol )

(I live in the US; Central MA. Not the most extreme temperature range but definitely not a temperate zone.)

@thomasfuchs @cadusilva also I learned that my ISP (Verizon Fios) will intercept those root server lookups. Use something like dnsleaktest to verify that you are indeed going to a root server.

David Mills, a true Internet pioneer, passed away on January 17, 2024. Probably best known for having led the development and maintenance of for decades, he was also involved in a great deal of early Internet protocol development.

@jtk I worked at Sun in the late ‘90s early ‘00s in the networking group. I did a bunch of support with NTP. It is one of those protocols that on the surface seems very easy. Then you peel away the proverbial onion and man o man is NTP complex.

I worked with a coworker that was a NTP genius and was in communication with David Mills frequently about the protocol and application.

The best one? The front button.

It changed the z-order of the windows that the mouse was on. So awesome to flip between windows. So much easier than alt-tabbing.
