The week after Thanksgiving will always be deeply bittersweet to me now.

This month, and next week in particular, mark the anniversary of the Hachyderm incident. @nova, @Taniwha, @dma, @malte, @quintessence, and I worked around the clock for over a week to migrate Hachyderm from Nóva's basement into Europe

I am forever indebted to that incident for launching my public speaking career, and to this team for becoming my beloved friends

And to Nóva, for chasing the dopamine, for tying us together

sdubinsky,

@hazelweakly @nova your write up of that incident helped me launch my current freelance career, so thank you for that. My condolences as well on nova’s passing.

I just got a complaint about my posts, which I concluded came from a troll, but perhaps I’m actually coming off in a way that rubs people the wrong way here.

The complaint was that by posting high resolution images and describing in detail the processes used to create them, I’m merely “showing off” in a way that isn’t useful to most people.

I indeed do rather niche photography, using relatively esoteric gear. I think some people are interested in process and enjoy the results.

sdubinsky,

@mattblaze I enjoy it

I'm an experienced programmer specializing in refactoring and cleaning up the worst codebases, whether it's from years of tech debt, architectural decisions made six years ago when the product was different, or code inherited from someone who went with the lowest bidder. Is every change taking longer than it should? Is there part of your code you're afraid to touch in case it breaks? I can help!

I know, I know, I said I was done computerposting and I wanted to be done computerposting because computers are horrible woeboxen, but here we go. Mute me for a day or two, I'll post better stuff soon.

Anyway game devs, or really anyone with too many projects along many different areas of expertise and too much disk space, what do your home or documents folders look like? Say I've already done a raccoon game and I wanna do a bunny game, does my home folder look like

music/
-bun
-rac
sfx/
-bun
-rac
psd/
-sprites/
--bun/
--rac/
-bg/
--bun/
--rac/
notes/
-bun/
-rac/
code/
-bun
-rac

Or does it look more like

bun/
-music/
-sfx/
-psd/
--sprites/
--bg/
-notes/
-code/
rac/
-music/
-sfx/
-psd/
--sprites/
--bg/
-notes/
-code/

Or do you just have one folder full of files called bunSprite092finalusethisone.psd right next to raclevel1testnotes.txt

Generally How Do You Do Computer Hoard

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: I'm gonna set this crap up to backup/sync with Nextcloud, some of it's gonna go on my phone, there's no sense in me having bunsprite.psd on my phone but bunnote.txt would be handy to have on there

sdubinsky,

@ifixcoinops obviously an unholy mix of both but my preference is the second

A boosted "Hey it's getting dark and I'm getting blue, help me out with Seasonal Affective Disorder tips" post reminded me of how I deal with my own seasonal affective disorder, so here, a small thread.

Here's how it works for me: my brain tells me to be sad in winter and happy in spring. But, my brain is a gullible little noodle, and I can trick it into thinking it's summer just by shining a bright light at it. So, light therapy lamp!

EXCEPT: light therapy lamps are very expensive. If I'm to spend money on my brain, I'm going to do it the cheap way AND the silly way, and build a smegging light therapy CANNON

(edit: haha this angle makes my wrist look REALLY WEIRD lol noodlywrist)

sdubinsky,

Let's see how well the fediverts knows their computing history! The internet was invented...

  1. in 1951 by the CIA as a new form of psychological warfare. At the time it was considered excessively cruel, but it eventually escaped containment in 1998.

  2. in 1827 by Alice Lovelace and her shifty companion Lord Bob Lovelace, but it was only used to tabulate multiplication tables for the Royal Tabulation Society.

  3. by Chinese scholars in the 10th century BCE, like everything else.

The last 24 hours have been some of the roughest, most brutal, most draining, most discouraging, and most disheartening I have experienced in a very very long time. I am tired, I am worn, I have not slept, and I am so exhausted. I am too tired to cry.

Does anyone have cheerful anything right now? News, puppies, pictures, anything? ❤️

What terminal app are people using these days? I always go back to Terminal.app, because a lot of the others aren't very Mac like. Warp is cool, but I'm not sure it's for me. Maybe just iTerm?

sdubinsky,

@collin Kitty. Just gotta be aware that there’s weird drama about the xterm info so you have to use their ssh kitten
