Should social.linux.pizza block the upcoming instance that Meta (Facebook) will launch?

So, I've been involved to create a LAN-event for kids in a few month. So I need to hear stories from you about similar events that you where involved in, and the pitfalls I have to look out for.

Basically, we will arrange a LAN-party for kids and their parents, and we expect 100-150 people attending and bringing their own machines + some consoles.

I am looking into building a router (opnSense) and buy some cheap mikrotik switches.

10Gbit core-networking, to each table, and then distribute...

I am thinking about selling my Thinkpad T15, and buy a gaming laptop instead.

What kind of temperatur and humidity sensors do you use for measuring outdoor and/or in the attic?

Should we silence mastodon.social?

Third spam wave in a very short time.

Is there any "smartplug" that does'nt require a cloud-service or an app in order to monitor electricity consumption and more?

Ideally, something that is open by default and can sent statistics over MQTT or similar

Help me decide what distro to use on my Garage PC.
I'll use it to program chips, mostly ESP32,ESP8266 and similar. Also listen in on radio traffic with an RTL-SDR.

I am defaulting to Debian on this one, if you does not try to convince me to try something else

For reasons, I have to probably close down my home-lab during for a few weeks/months this fall.

Does anyone have any recommendation to what provide I might move my workloads?

They consist of:

  • One small kuberenetes cluster
  • Web and database servers
  • matrix-synapse server
  • other various servers

Is Hetzner still the "go to" provider?
The only thing that I need is an european (preferably swedish) provider, and is nice to the wallet.

I have no idea why Unifi decides to disconnect all wireless clients suddenly.

Same issues as always, I thought that they have become better

Well, I've seen alot of criticism against #cloudflare and the sites behind it.

Instead of blaming and shaming sites because they are using cloudflare - the discussion should instead be:

  • what alternatives do we have?

Some people say, and I quote "setup load balancers, and DDoS-mitigations".

I find that kind of "tips" extremely unconstructive. They really dont mean anything, apart from "look how smart I am on talking".

What REAL alternatives do we have?

Now the quest begins of finding out what kind of food I should consume tonight.

Am I the only person who does not see the benefit of using LVM on a Virtual Machine?

It makes somewhat sense on a physical machine, but not on a VM in my world.

Now I'll spend an ungodly amount of time to configure my Ubnt Dream Router to perfection - hopefully there will be no outage for my person matrix-server :P

Is there any viable alternative to Rancher out there?
Preferably something that I can let anyone login to, and deploy workloads, but something that is not that stupid to run

What I managed to do during lunch-break

Figured out how the VLAN shit works on MikroTik switches toghether with a Unifi Router.

A cable from the top floor to the basement (outside thou :mortysad: )

Installed and mounted an AccessPoint

Tested the network by playing two games of War Thunder

Had some food

RedHat closing the git, reddit being assholes, twitter going payforview, youtube forcing people to pay for premium.

The hunt for "monetizing content" is really destroying the internet and the community that I am used to.
I am happy that atleast software like Mastodon and the larger Fediverse is keeping the small but bright candle of hope alive.

People will call me stupid, but I bet on fedi to succeed.
And honestly, I dont think that metas entry to fedi will kill it - just make it grow.

Any others that is getting utter bullshit answers more frequently?
The "AI hype" is really destroying basic information searching, and it will absolutely make people dumber because it is just lying to people
