Advice

selea, to random

Well, I've seen alot of criticism against and the sites behind it.

Instead of blaming and shaming sites because they are using cloudflare - the discussion should instead be:

  • what alternatives do we have?

Some people say, and I quote "setup load balancers, and DDoS-mitigations".

I find that kind of "tips" extremely unconstructive. They really dont mean anything, apart from "look how smart I am on talking".

What REAL alternatives do we have?

ICANN recently started to recommend all domains to deploy DNSSEC as a consequence after the first successful attack against a non-signed domain.

Please enable DNSSEC on your domain in order to protect your users.

For reasons, I have to probably close down my home-lab during for a few weeks/months this fall.

Does anyone have any recommendation to what provide I might move my workloads?

They consist of:

  • One small kuberenetes cluster
  • Web and database servers
  • matrix-synapse server
  • other various servers

Is Hetzner still the "go to" provider?
The only thing that I need is an european (preferably swedish) provider, and is nice to the wallet.

Is there any "smartplug" that does'nt require a cloud-service or an app in order to monitor electricity consumption and more?

Ideally, something that is open by default and can sent statistics over MQTT or similar

I just suspended the entire netz.org domain for now.

EDIT:
Turns out that this is a test/demonstration for a academic paper. Performed on against one instance only

"The Cloud" is just a way for management to tinker with numbers and have nothing to do with "saving money"

So, the water-management company refuses to share the keys to the Water-meter, so I can monitor the usage myself - they use GDPR as an excuse.

And it did not take long until I realized that I have not given consent on sending the water-meter usage to a third party in another country.

if they use GDPR against me, I will use it against them.
