Oh fuck. Throughout the last few weeks I had some time off and I used it to work on my blog, reflecting on a few things...

All this was good, but it also triggered painful memories and I started to vaguely recall some events in childhood. When they come up, I feel like crying, but I can't access all of the memory. Don't know if it's a trauma-response or if I'm overreacting.

Now I feel I have to address this stuff, but it's overwhelming and I'm afraid of dealing with it.

@Sci_Fi_FanGirl @actuallyautistic Speaking from the perspective of someone with C-PTSD as well as plain ol' PTSD (on top of - such fun! /not)...sometimes you need to make a conscious choice to let the 'stuff' percolate to the surface in its own time so that you can process it incrementally and not all at once, because otherwise it can be re-traumatizing.

A friend who was dealing with an unpromising future where he knew he would need to be taken care of in the not so distant future, once told me that his biggest fear would be when the moment came when the last of his independence would melt away and that he would become a burden to others.

I didn't know how to console him. So I just sat with him and listened.

It amazes me how much, as a culture, that we internalize our own care, and the care of others, as a "burden".

What is wrong with us?

@Mrfunkedude This is not any single culture - we have never, as a species, embraced those who are marginalized or disabled or elderly as we should and made it clear to all that none of us us a burden.

@actuallyautistic #ActuallyAutistic I just learned that stimulation of the body's proprioception systems in turn down regulates some aspects of the nervous system that are typically overactive for us.

I also learned proprioception stimulation is something Occupational Therapists prescribe for autistic clients.

Wondering if anyone can share any such exercises or methods an OT has prescribed for them?

Deep muscle & tissue stimulation is the general notion I've gathered so far.

@ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic I think my background anxiety level (from having an 'overclocked' brain) 's normally higher than it would be for an NT person, so it sounds like the muscle/tissue stimulation would help with the 'armoring' that accompanies that. I know when I worked with a trainer, the stretching helped tremendously.

Maybe look up PTSD related stretching?

@eonity @actuallyautistic I can be pretty intense looking for craft supplies and once, a clerk followed me around the store because (being nearsighted) I picked up the occasional package to get a better look at the contents...and I know my mother's had at least one incident in a Rite-Aid because she didn't buy anything (and she could be autistic, but very mild affect, hard to diagnose).
