@Gargron@ummjackson@mmasnick I straight up had a colleague say he wasn't chatting with anyone that wasn't using Skype when XMPP got brought up in a group conversation a decade+ ago. He uses signal now, though.
The problem is a lot of the configuration was not user friendly, combined with more expensive hosting. I would say that something like Synapse is much more complex (potentially) but the configuration is much more straight forward. The maintenance, though, is not.
@robotspacer@grumpygamer I saw the screenshots, and without reading the actual toot, I was thinking "Wow, this looks a lot like Deja-Vu and The Uninvited..."

Minimus is perched precariously in capite Vibrissae* (on Vibrissa's head), with no habenae (reins) or stratum (saddle). He's holding tightly to her pili (fur) and hoping not to fall off statim (immediately).
*gratias agimus tibi (thank you ) Merlin, for taking the role of Vibrissa again! #LatinVerbs
I’ve been a bit crap posting on here. I haven’t watched many movies this year but I’ve been off work for a couple of days so doing some 2023 #horror catch up.
Any recommendations for this year are appreciated.
@supernovae I've been trying to find seasons of Wings on digital media (DVD) but unfortunately all I find is the sitcom. There's compilations of certain episodes for sale on the rainforest site but I'm looking for very specific episodes.
@evan Primarily user data concerns. It's probably overzealous in that regard, I just would prefer no chance of monetization of existing user content that may have been generated on a Mastodon instance.
@evan I am generally supportive of collaborative & collective efforts - hosting isn't free and sysops don't look to make (too much) money from these operations. That's probably particularly true at scale where diskspace starts to become an issue. I'm mostly weary about existing (or forthcoming) platforms that may be looking to access and monetize Fediverse user data in some fashion - eg Meta, Google, Twitter, BlueSky; platforms whose existence attempts to profit from the users.
Hi @evan@cwebber @pfefferle
Timely question: Does anyone know the status of a formal or informal building out an #ActivtyPub test suite, akin to the one used to test http://webmention.rocks but for Acitivity pub.
I know the activitypub.rocks effort ended & I see this one that seemed to evolve from that but has been derelict for a while.
People act like Gmail came in and afterwards there were no more email providers. Did a lot of people use it? Yes. Did it somehow kill off all off the small email providers? No. Some of them? Sure. All? No.
Why did I switch from Gmail to Proton? Because I stopped trusting Gmail. And felt that I could trust Proton more. Can I still email someone that uses Gmail? Yes. Do I have to support Gmail? No.
The purpose of an open protocol is choice. Otherwise why bother making it open?
@Mrfunkedude No hate from me, here. I do think it's a bit strange to have ever "trusted" Gmail. I was one of the beta users and I'm not sure if it was broadly advertised, but even in 2004ish it was well known that your email content was being scanned for the alleged purpose of tuned advertising. I was by no means some security hardliner that was in the know, either.
I do think there is a fundamental problem with handing a service off like that to a corporate provider.
Call to Lemmy instance admins! (geddit.social)
As you can see, there is a massive spam wave going on on Lemmey based instances....
