So, it's been a week.

The house is different. It's much more quiet.

I'm reminded of how negative space is used by artists to create something without actually painting it.

He was larger than life to us.

Now, I think maybe it was somewhat the same for the rest of the female kitties. There is a palpable difference in the air.

Anyway, I'm fine, just sad. And very appreciative of the time we did have together. Every day was a joy and his memory is a blessing.

sfunk1x,

@glowrocks Rest in peace, Aiko. Kitties are such a wonderful part of our lives. They are too good for this world, but I am also glad they are here to share it with us.

Seth Meyers: How do you address concerns about your age?

🔥President : First, you have to look at the other guy. He’s about as old as me but he can't even remember his wife's name. It's also about how old your ideas are. He wants to take us back 60 years. It's about the future

sfunk1x,

@bigfishrunning Thanks for the retarded take, kid. I needed a good chuckle at your expense.

Ran in my first today. I usually run with the , but since I've got both the and the , I figured I'd run the Z with BCA and the Vette with the SCCA. It was a fun event, and the Z performed flawlessly. I need to tighten up the right front swaybar endlink as I can hear it clicking on transition. Looking forward to trying to run a(n almost) full season with both cars this year. Video is fun my fastest (third) run for points.

For every bomb 💣 a country sends to another country I think they should have produce a receipt to their own citizens that they housed an unhoused person or fed a starving person in their own country.

sfunk1x,

@LALegault I feel that in the US, the DoD discretionary and non-discretionary spending should be their own itemized tax sub-line items so they show up on people's paystubs. So folks understand just how much of their federal income tax is going to it. I don't have faith it would change many people's thinking, but hey, transparency is great right!?

I'm gonna be honest y'all, it's felt dark lately, and for good reason, LGBTQ+ rights in the balance, an election coming up, women struggling to get basic Healthcare, mass shootings, SCOTUS, the environment. The list goes on and on, and the media twists everything to sound even worse, or just straight up ignores actual news. But here's the thing, I know a lot of you, and the fact that you exist in the world gives me hope. You care about the future and you want good things, and so do I, and as long as that spark is there, we have hope. So, let's focus on some good today! Share a good headline, some positive news either on a larger scale or just something personal, a nice picture you took, a funny meme or video, whatever made you feel good or at least, gave you a smile. Let's share some joy!

sfunk1x,

@LALegault @RickiTarr Some part of me thinks those bullies parents are the ones talking about "firmament" in the comments of Facebook space related posts...

sfunk1x,

@LALegault @RickiTarr that there are too many parents with heads stuck up their asses, and they're kids reflect that behavior in their own social circles? Sure.

sfunk1x,

@ardi60 It is certainly unfortunate that software is readily accessible and people set mastodon up without running through much configuration. I do think there should be changes to sign up defaults, potentially eliminating the configuration possibility of open signups. I mentioned this to the creator of Pixelfed as well. There's no legitimate reason you would have open signups without basic verification - email, hcaptcha, etc. Callback verifiers existed on BBSes for a reason.

Today a recruiter called wanting me to work at Apple on-site in Cupertino, but for maybe up to 12 months and as a contractor through his firm.

For the job they want a 4-year degree and 5 years experience, so that's a Senior/Staff Engineer, equiv. to Google L5/L6. I work as a Principal Engineer (L8).

Even for the lower level, this bozo was offering only 25% of market rate.

Then he asked how much I'm looking for. I told him "market rate at my level".

After wasting my time with essentially an insult, I'm not even going to help him with his research.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would decide to vote for Donald Trump (or not vote for Joe Biden) because Fani Willis was knocking boots with the special prosecutor here.

So as long as it doesn't impact the actual case, it is strictly a Georgia ethics problem and not something anyone else needs to worry about. :blobcatcoffee:

Fani Willis acknowledges a ‘personal relationship’ with prosecutor she hired in Trump’s Georgia case

https://apnews.com/article/fani-willis-nathan-wade-trump-indictment-493165c4614761d4b965923696134c09

sfunk1x,

@gulovsen irrelevant to the POTUS election, sure. How can one be an adult, in that position, and think any part of that is appropriate? It smacks of short-sightedness and long term strategy. Want to have an intimate relationship with a direct report, that you hired, in an extremely high profile situation? Fine - just resign your position(s) first and eliminate the potential for even the appearance of conflict of interest. It feels like it was intentionally throwing the game at this point.

I'm aware of a certain Pixelfed instance being targeted by spammers and used to deliver spam to accounts across the fediverse.

The same thing happened with Lemmy last summer, and was caused by a dangerous config cocktail:

  • Open Registrations

  • No email verification

  • Less active moderation (waiting to get reports rather than finding this from paying closer attention)

There are some things I can improve in Pixelfed, but these 3 are dangerous when used together!

sfunk1x,

@dansup Is there a legitimate use case to allowing open signups AND no email verification as a configuration combination?

sfunk1x,

@tek Makes me wonder if and the likelihood of many more of them in existence, combined with centralization of HTTPS certificate control (Let's Encrypt), means that all of our traffic has been recorded for the better part of 20 years. Not to mention most web searches include URL attributes which are inherently insecure. Perhaps it's just paranoia, but I don't think the true nature of those bifurcated fiber pipes is completely understood.

Which country other than the US could be first to implement universal basic income? Maybe Canada? Brazil? Germany? South Korea? South Africa? India? Japan?

What about China?

Let me know in the replies which country you'd put money on to win the race for UBI.

https://www.scottsantens.com/why-china-could-surprise-the-world-by-being-the-first-country-to-adopt-universal-basic-income-ubi/

sfunk1x,

@scottsantens UBI in the US seems a fool's errand without having a massive amount of publicly owned housing, first. It's far too easy for land owners to increase the rents to absorb much of the UBI, and there's simply not a realistic path forward to regulate that with a broad brush across the many hundreds of thousands of American villages/towns/cities that exist, currently.

I'm a supporter of UBI in spirit, but after watching covid shutdowns, I expect more of that behavior.

Is Julian Assange a hero, villain, or something in between?

sfunk1x,

@RickiTarr He's a conduit, but it's also a red flag he reveals secrets of only a specific set of people. I question him the same way I question people like Mark Lane and Oliver Stone as being a KGB assets. Is there some truth in what they are saying? Perhaps. Stopped clocks are correct twice a day. It is in that frame of context that they can easily muddle their lies and the naive public will eat it up. The same case for Snowden - I'm not even sure what new data he even surfaced.

The only metric that matters after quitting substack

$0 from my writing goes to platforming and funding Nazis.

No matter what my traffic looks like, I'm coming out on top of this one.

sfunk1x,

@Daojoan I'm just a nerdy country boy, but it seems like a registered domain that is an approximation of your name, with some decent SEO would net you the same benefits as medium/substack and you would only be beholden to a minimum of technical requirements. If you used a static blog system like , you'd be able to write everything in markdown (nearly plain text), publish quickly and not have to worry about weird platform problems. It also wouldn't cost much (<$100/yr).

sfunk1x,

Thinking I should write a howto on how to do this as a pipeline to help journalists break out of these cycles.
