You’re probably using the wrong dictionary

Fascinating read. Also led me to do a quick search and find that Webster’s 1913 edition is available online:

https://www.websters1913.com

(Anyone know who made/maintains this?)

Another interesting dictionary to check out, from the other side of the pond, is The Chambers Dictionary.

@aral The whois info is redacted, but the 1913 websters site has been around since 2014. Which is fairly impressive.

It's really inappropriate, but as an author, when someone tells me that I made them cry, it's really hard not to grin.

@rikudou
For a deeper philosophical spin on the idea, you might try "The Mote In God's Eye" by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle.

@dave Aw, you're a gud one.

@MariaRomanov A few people have told me that the whole thing needs to be read in a single sitting for it to work.

Personally... It's just slow and depressing. Nothing that really keeps me, and nothing that makes it feel worth reading.

I'm pretty suspicious of any website that puts a short upper limit on my password length.

shaknais,

@ben Kinda screams of plaintext VARCHAR instead of hashed encoding.

@OmegaMouse The Thursday Murder Club are a cosy something. Lightweight, easy to read, and they've absolutely taken off in the few years they've been out.

@jordanlund I prefer the 5x8" book size, and I think that'll work really well for your lil library.

Unfortunately, if you were to go with my favourite book series, Wheel of Time, that'd be all you have room for.

So... Winnie the Pooh, Muddleheaded Wombat, Looking for Alibrandi, some Animorphs, maybe Tomorrow When the War Began, Fairytales for Wilde Girls.

Publishing a copy-lefted book (sh.itjust.works)

I’m planning to publish a book in the following months, but I’m not entirely sure if the procedure is the same for both copyrighted and copy-lefted books. If you hadn’t guessed, I’m publishing one with the latter license (i.e. Creative Commons). I’m planning on using Lulu.com for this first book, but I was wondering if...

@razrabotka My Necromancer's Apprentice is copyleft. You can find it on Smashwords, Amazon, and Archive. As well as everywhere else people have uploaded it.

    Just blew a clients mind with a simple <button> the email went like this.

    > Thank you so much for finding this miraculous solution! I've been trying to style a button out of CSS and ARIA roles. How on earth did you find this element?

    🤔. Folks, you really, really, really, don't have to be an expert to do this job! Just learn HTML and you will be lightyears ahead of everybody else.

    @weirdwriter Yeah, Apple have been broken for years. Unfortunately, a lot of people use iPhones.

    JAWS has gone back and forth on supporting it, which is annoying, but I think they're finally working properly?

    MS' built-in started recognising it in 2019, too!

    Honestly, I'd given up keeping track, because Apple is so slow. I just remember I can't use it if I want to be friendly.

    It's not about what they can afford to pay, it's about winning this one battle in a larger class war. it's about making sure workers stay in line. They give in on this, they'll have no excuse not to provide every worker with an actual living wage and healthcare, etc.

    shaknais,
    @shaknais@mastodon.social avatar

    @Radical_EgoCom It's not even that. It means they have to listen next time workers have a problem. Have to treat them as human, and not replaceable components.

    @Radical_EgoCom Yeah, even over here in Australia... Disability is less than minimum wage. And if you earn minimum, they garnish your wages.

    There are a lot of approaches when constructing a villain, and for some stories the 2-dimensional figure who just wants to wreck the world is more than enough. However, for most tales, you'll want something a little bit more subtle than that...
