Two things became clear to me recently.

1. There is no WOTC, only Hasbro.

2. D&D is a digital brand now.

It’s up to us to keep our hobby strong. Buy physical RPG books and PDFs direct from independent publishers. Don’t become reliant on online digital tools. Use paper character sheets. Let players use options from non-WOTC 5e books. Play other RPGs.

What else can we do strengthen our hobby from the whims of any single company?

#dnd tip from the archive: Be careful dropping traps and surprise attacks on the character whose player is willing to use them to propel the story forward. Don't regularly punish characters for taking initiative in the story.

Shadowdark RPG has changed me.

First death “as you expire, your friends hold you in their arms promising to share tales of your fantastic deeds as long as they live”

Latest death “The forest dragon gently holds your nose closed with two claws and tilts your head back. It then gives you mouth to mouth only instead of oxygen it’s chlorine gas. Your internal organs liquify.”

I’m not throwing out D&D. I love D&D. This love does not extend to Hasbro.

I’m a fan of many of D&Ds designers but not a fan of Hasbro’s push to a dominant digital walled garden. That cuts its customers off from the larger hobby instead of expanding it.

I’m happy to play other RPGs but I still love D&D.
