Having to deal with build issues of software older than three and a half years will ultimately be the reason I quit the industry and start a career in gardening.

@code_disaster Apple probably doesn't have any code older than 3 and half years, maybe work there? =)

The macOS Music app is suddenly… not playing my music. Songs seem to go into a playing state in the UI, but never advance from 0:00. The files are all ok, playable through Quick Look and other players, so it’s definitely just the app failing.

It had one job.

"digitally remastered"

Like, okay. Fine. But what else could it be? Analogically? Manually? Optically? With crayons?

Last year someone finally (after 22 years!) made a patch to disable the broken adaptive scaling algorithm from Max Payne's starting difficulty setting. Playing the game with it is like playing it for the first time. Final levels are no longer an exercise in patience and savescumming. I recommend it highly.

@dosnostalgic but.. you're not supposed to save scum, you're supposed to die a lot. =)

sol_hsa,
@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@dosnostalgic I mean, I cheat a lot in games just to get through them, and as far as I recall I didn't need to in order to get through the game... I just gave the difficulty scaler enough data that I suck.

sol_hsa,
@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@dosnostalgic So why is it broken? Because you have basically two kinds of players:

  1. careful, not too good players, who save and load a lot
  2. Not-careful, possibly good players who don't save and load a lot.

From the scalers point of view, group 1 never dies, so... they must be great! Up the difficulty! And group 2 dies every now and then (because, honestly, some rooms are total BS) so, drop the difficulty.

Group 1 complains the game is too hard, group 2, too easy. Nobody's happy.

Had an interesting discussion while walking with my son yesterday.

How do you define indoors vs outdoors?

If you're in a tunnel, is it indoors?

Is it about the amount of ventilation?

If it's about the ventilation, are you indoors on a plane?

Is it the amount of recycled air?

If you're in a big hall, you're clearly indoors, right?

If you're in an airtight artificial biome, is it indoors?

I'm a gamer. I sometimes play too many games. And I don't mind stupid game stories (most of the time), as I distinguish between story and action games. And I also see, why "dumb" stories are often times necessary for gameplay.

BUT knowing about the rising genre of LitRPGs I really wish people would start reading REAL books and stop writing stupid game stories down as "books". If the story of a game is what you came up with for a book, you played too many games.

sol_hsa,
@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@ratqueen I found novelization of the first Gabriel Knight game in a second-hand store and bought it. It's by the game's designer. It's ... not good. It's pretty much just explaining the walk through of the game.

Hilight of the book is when the adventure game logic gets completely out of hand, she writes something like "Gabrield didn't know why he ended there" or some such.

Heh, whatever skeleton crew is still maintaining iTunes Store seems to not be doing so well. All of the music I’ve ever purchased is suddenly “hidden”, leaving it in a broken state in the Music app.

Needed to go to iTunes Store → Account → Downloads and Purchases → Hidden Purchases and use the awful, slow, utterly broken UI to “unhide” them. Had to manually click [Unhide] so many times I got rate-limited.
-_-

sol_hsa,

@jonikorpi Depends on your definition of sensible.

sol_hsa,
@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@jonikorpi youtube music and spotify are the obvious ones. But if you don't like google or don't like spotify, then things get trickier. There's always random music streams on the net, like kohina, and probably thousands of radio stations that stream. Again, depends on what you're actually after.

My productivity tip is to make todo lists for myself.

Not so much to keep track of what I should be doing, but in order to make me pick the task that's least annoying to do.

I'll look at all the options and think "this one might not be so bad".

And then I'm at least doing something rather than nothing!

As a person with literally two hours of experience in the language, I feel I'm expert enough to state this opinion:

The language could use a reform.

They don't use v. W is their v. There's no reason for this.

Some sounds can be written in two ways, either with accented characters or two letters. There's probably some logic behind this.

In some two letter combinations the first letter is omitted when speaking.

While at it, the accented l could be changed to the (now unused) w.
