"But how does it scale?" is a common question for organizational transformation initiatives. The answer is that it scales primarily via enthusiasm and learning, not via structure or framework.

Example:

Let's say the required outcome is to move 100 people over 10 kilometers. Do you:

  1. Build a juggernaut that fits 100 people 🚚 - the "framework" approach
  2. Organize a 10km fun run and train people up 🏃 - the nimble, humane approach

The 10km run is the way

#transformation #FastFlow

@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@matthewskelton
Not sure if the example fits. In most places I've worked at, if you tell people to run for 10km, they'll probably look for a new place to work at. Better to hire a bus.

There's way more shoes in stores these days where you don't need to tie the laces.

My first reaction to this was negative, but then I figured, why?

The first generation of people who never had to have shoes that have laces are now old enough to make decisions about shoe designs.

And they don't like tying laces.

And that is perfectly fine.

Mind-blowing just how much money's been wasted on the Tories' latest attempt to import US-style gerrymandering. I wonder if it's more or less than Rwanda.

sol_hsa,
@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@andrewwillmott I see the point of using a photo ID (that's the way it is in Finland anyway) - but having different rules for different people? That's not right.

sol_hsa,
@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@andrewwillmott It's not compulsory to vote here. But if they wanted to get everyone to vote, all they'd need to do is give a free bucket to everyone who does.

Microsoft releases MS-DOS as Open Source:

“This repo contains the original source-code and compiled binaries for MS-DOS v1.25 and MS-DOS v2.0, plus the source-code for MS-DOS v4.00 jointly developed by IBM and Microsoft. (…) All files within this repo are released under the MIT License as per the LICENSE file stored in the root of this repo.”

sol_hsa,
@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@TritTriton @johl I suspect later versions contained more licensed third party components, making open sourcing complicated.

I just do laundry whenever we have accumulated enough dirty clothes (and/or are running out of clean ones)

I wonder if the target demographic for the rentable electric scooters is assholes. At least if I consider where people leave the things. Such as sideways parked in the middle of a bicycle lane on a steep hill. Right after a curve.

sos, to programming
@sos@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

I hate when programmers tell other programmers "Don't do this" "Don't do that". Don't listen to these people.

And don't gatekeep other people's code. Let people program however they want.

Worst thing is, person posting this DOES use early return in their code.

I think programmers just think they're better than others. "I can do this, but you can't". Don't be like that. It's not OK.

sol_hsa,
@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@sos
There's some actual industrial coding standards that ban early returns.

It's one way to enforce readability, but in my opinion early returns can in some cases actually improve readability.

sol_hsa,
@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@slembcke @sos
Wouldn't know. But if you think of a very complex function with many nested structures, having a random return in the middle of it can make it really hard to parse.

What the hell is up with this 'soundbar' trend? First they make TVs so thin they can't fit speakers in, and now people buy an additional device to make the sound come out somewhat ok? How is that helpful?

Remember when 'soundbars' were just part of a television? Now they're 200 euro o_O

sol_hsa,
@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@Tijn mine runs Linux, takes a minute to boot, and the remote has buttons for tweaking audio latency because that's an issue with friggin speakers now

Recovering from a back injury, really wishing we had some way to develop software while walking about, especially outdoors. Not looking forward to sitting/standing in one spot again for 90% of working hours.

Some of the most productive time, code-wise, for me was my military service: I thought about code for a week while in there, and coded in the weekends off.

Time sitting at the computer isn't necessarily the most productive time.

This doesn't apply to reverse engineering or code archeology, though. You need to have enough of the pieces in your head for it to work.

Debian/Nvidia: shrug "Ok! But that SPIRV extension you asked about? No chance, my friend!"

Our whole thing as a species is abstraction. The reality is too complex to handle on an atomic level, so we abstract, abstract, abstract.

And while abstracting, we also simplify things, some things are not important whole others are.

Tree is a tree regardless of the species. Matter is matter, regardless of what it consists of. People are people, while individuals can be extremely different.

The macOS Music app is suddenly… not playing my music. Songs seem to go into a playing state in the UI, but never advance from 0:00. The files are all ok, playable through Quick Look and other players, so it’s definitely just the app failing.
