It’s rare that developers truly consider how app behavior affects user experience. I was deeply engaged in writing a post. Then poof app crashed.
Realization hits. Expletive hurled. How will I regain my emotional state to reconstruct the reply? Sadness.
Relaunch app and find original post. Start reply. Oh wait… might it? I tap ⚙️ and relief washes over me. It kept the draft. These are moments that mark great apps.
@btaroli@ivory These are the things that actually make software great. Sure, it shouldn't have crashed, but they planned for the worst and realized how valuable your post was to you. This is the kind of user-focused thinking I'd love to see more in #FossUX!
After a long time of thinking about it, I'm strongly considering retiring this account. Here's why, and what I'm likely to do. I'm open to feedback from followers on alternatives.
I've used the name emacsen online since roughly 1999, and I still see myself associated with it, and making a single user instance was a no brainer.
But these days, I run an entire other instance, and a vast majority of my posts are from @serge
@emacsen Alright, following you over there! I wish you a lot of success in running the site.
However I do wonder what makes the Fediverse unsafe for jews in your view.
To help us raise more funds for our development efforts, we are launching a new line of merchandise for Mastodon including t-shirts, mugs, enamel pins, and stickers.
Someone I peripherally know tries to look for an app on #FDroid (per my recommendation).
The screen is staying blank and they get no search results.
After basic troubleshooting they give up and I feel a bit dumb for having suggested the #FOSS route.
@jr@ifixcoinops The F-Droid situation that just happened is supposed to be an example for things that happen like this every day, around the clock, with hundreds of pieces of FOSS software.
I sadly don't have the energy to get involved in the development process of many projects to fix small bugs (I have tried/will try).
I am mainly trying to contribute by describing approaches through which FOSS projects could, quite possibly, be useful to many more people (with not much extra effort!).
@jr@ifixcoinops In a way I would like these things to change, but in general I don't see myself making demands for my own interest, but the interest of getting the project adopted by more people (which of course comes with many positive effects).
If the project maintainers don't want that, that's entirely fair - catering to everyone is not their job.
@jr@ifixcoinops But if you do want to cater to a large user base (I feel like F-Droid does want to spread the FOSS gospel far and wide), even with a small team, maybe it makes sense to ask yourself what to prioritize: Fixing bugs that make the software useless for 20% of people (made-up number) or building a minor feature (that will improve general usability by a few %)?
@matt I think them joining Bluesky would be worse for the fediverse. Bluesky would be an actual, direct competitor fragmenting the "federated social networking" space.
So I guess the lesson here is don't piss off someone who owns a #sticker machine. I don't know who Andy is, or what they did, but I know they're a dick, and that this fact is stuck all over #Hamburg
