I love everything about this: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240503-why-you-should-let-insects-eat-your-plants

Our forest garden isn't just for us, it's for all the animals and insects, and plants that live there. We use sacrificial plants and trap crops, not even using organic weedkilling techniques like nematodes or soap sprays.

Looks like a new #nix fork is about to drop at https://aux.computer/. They're still figuring whether to migrate away from github. Hope it works out either way but freeing themselves from the grapple of Github, even if it's using folders would be better than staying there IMHO (which doesn't mean much tbf)

Today we harvested three-cornered leeks from a hedge. They're an invasive species tasting like garlic. After harvesting I chopped the bulbs and we made a pickling solution with freshly chopped ginger, celery and mustard seeds and white wine vinegar. Then we blitzed the rest, mixing in cashews and pine nuts to make a pesto before adding table salt to make a brine and transferring to jars to ferment for a few days. We'll use the left over pesto mix tonight.

my understanding is that american's do not empty 1-2 kilogrammes of dishwasher salt into a special salt compartment of their dishwashers? as a european i take pride in emptying a 1-2 kilogramme box of dishwasher salt into a special salt compartment of my dishwasher to contribute to the effective washing of my dishes

stevelord,
@stevelord@bladerunner.social avatar

@hazel I have and you shouldn't. Table salt is too fine grained and contains anti caking agents that can clog up the dishwasher. Sea salt might be coarse and pure enough.

Every time a techbro tells me I need to change to some boneheaded security solution like DoH or shit like that it ends up with shitty consequences. Today it's Passkeys being used to lock customers into platforms. Other than anyone who looked at who was involved, who could've possibly predicted this might happen?

https://fy.blackhats.net.au/blog/2024-04-26-passkeys-a-shattered-dream/

stevelord,
@stevelord@bladerunner.social avatar

My favourite bit from TFA: "So do yourself a favour. Get something like bitwarden or if you like self hosting get vaultwarden. Let it generate your passwords and manage them. If you really want passkeys, put them in a password manager you control. But don't use a platform controlled passkey store, and be very careful with security keys."

Join me next week when I have inevitably to point out storing authentication on a device people watch porn on the toilet on with is obviously also a bad move.

My take on machine-narrated books:

This "speech synthesis" tech is vital, there's people who rely on it! And it enriches many lives to build more natural sounding ones!

But don't advertise them as "audiobooks", a good narrator brings more than a speech synthesizer can (Eleven Labs is awfully good though). Any ebook can be speech-synthesized, so just call these ebooks! They don't deserve a separate marketplace, or to compete directly with audiobooks!

stevelord,
@stevelord@bladerunner.social avatar

@alcinnz the bit I struggle with is why the speech isnt bundled with the regular ebooks. Having readers be able to flip between the two would be an accessibility boon. The cost is far lower than human narrators, so the only reason to sell separately is dedication to the profit motive. That aside yours is the best take on this i've heard so far.

I’ve got a fat pipe (ffnar) to the house, so I figure I should really save my cash, stop self hosting everything on remote VPS’s, and get myself a little Linux machine with a load of disc space that can sit in my office.

So I bought a Firebat T8 off Ali Express. N100. 16G Ram. 512G disc.

IT IS FUCKING TIIIIINY

What we need is to rename HMRC as :-

OfDoom

As in the government department "of doom"...

Who's with me on that?

stevelord,

@revk I got an email telling me to log into my HMRC account to pick up a message. I left the uk over two years ago and filed all the paperwork to Lea e. I haven't checked but I expect they'll want me to file a return when ive already left.

So yeah, OfDoom, the shakedown regulator sounds about right.

Princeton Uni have created their own AI SWE agent to fix code: "On the full SWE-bench test set, SWE-agent resolves 12.29% of issues, achieving the state-of-the-art performance on the full test set."
This isn't a breakthrough. It's a datacentre-sized kettle boiling drinking water for no damned reason. Don't accept any association of these kinds of numbers as success. Demand better, or that this shit fucks off into the sea.

Restored an old computer from the attic with Lubuntu for class 1 (3-5 yo) at the local school. Cut everything back, made everything big, put desktop icons up for tuxmath, tuxpaint, gcompris and extreme tuxracer and added a little thing so the computer speaks and asks the kids if they'd like to play a game on startup. The head was blown away that all this was free. Hopefully on staff meeting day the other teachers will get to have a play and we can see about rescuing more attic gear this summer.

stevelord,
@stevelord@bladerunner.social avatar

This is important to me as the school has had zero ICT for decades and now we have the start of a programme to provide through-school ICT learning building on existing subjects and skills instead of learning ICT for the heck of it.
