If you're not finding enough time to fit some reading into your life, here's a selection of wonderful short books you can rip through in a couple of hours. A short 🧵 📚

They’re probably only specks in this phone photo, but three red kites and a buzzard are in this sky. #birds #nature #Scotland

suehewit,
@suehewit@mastodon.scot avatar

@felicitymartin Hi, zoomed in to see the kites! Hardly ever see them here in my bit of the I did see one flying north earlier this year. Lots of Buzzards here, I love to hear them call. Once I saw a pair lock talons and fall from the sky.

suehewit,
@suehewit@mastodon.scot avatar

@felicitymartin I was working away near Milton Keynes a few years ago and was amazed to see Kites in flocks whirling overhead above a built up urban area. I hope they will eventually spread south down this way from your release site. My biggest bird wish at the moment is to see Golden Eagles, there has been a successful release program further west. We have had a breeding pair of Osprey nearby this year, very exciting.

suehewit,
@suehewit@mastodon.scot avatar

@felicitymartin we are sandwiched between the Tweed to the south, (fishing) and the Lammermuir hills to the north, (grouse and pheasant). Raptors, historically, have been persecuted but as you say, attitudes are changing - thankfully.

suehewit,
@suehewit@mastodon.scot avatar

@felicitymartin much denser populations I imagine. I’d love to see the White Tailed eagles too, have been a favourite since reading Stonar Eagles many years ago. Can’t remember the author’s name off hand, but it was set partly on the south coast where I come from and partly highland and islands. Some books read as a child really do influence the adults we grow into.

OK, here's a really good idea: a small, cooperative, wool processing mill, close to the shepherds who keep the sheep.

Scotland's wool is an amazing resource producing high quality, highly insulating fibre which can be made into excellent, warm, durable clothing – but most of it now goes to waste.

Please support this!

As a woman within the incredibly male dominated world of drystone walling, I have unfortunately experienced a lot of negative things that have really affected my mental health.

After taking a lot of time out, this week was a turning point. Working in beautiful rural Scotland & building this garden feature, I've been so enjoying drystone again. Working away happily in the sun, I realised that I can love and be involved in the craft without loving and being involved in the community.

suehewit,
@suehewit@mastodon.scot avatar

@kristiedegaris such skill! I’m in awe. My OH did a bit of dry stone walling with Scottish Wildlife Trust years ago, he couldn’t get a feel for it, so he, and I, appreciate the work and artisanship involved.

@curatedjenny I love these sock toys too much. This chap is cashmere ted, I made him from an old felted cardigan, it’s such fun to give old worn clothes a new life and a personality.

52square, to knitting

Hey @knitting friends I am facing a new problem. I am my cardigan on metal old size 8 needles (4mm) and now the back has grown a lot. I am getting in my hand and upper arm. I noticed and stopped last night but still sore today. Obviously I will take a break until it heals, but then what should I do? Would swapping to circulars help or should I rest my knitting on a table rather than my lap or is there a better solution?

suehewit,
@suehewit@mastodon.scot avatar

@52square @knitting I wonder if a cushion on your lap to take some of the weight of the knitting might help … I got the longest needles I could find so that the blunt end of the needle rests on a cushion at my side when knitting, I’ve also never tried circular working so I’m watching replies here.

Just finished a sweater in Nicole Frost Yarns -- two Rainbow Nebula Cashmerino Gradiant packs. That stuff is amazing! My daughter Edie is modeling it. The colors are just outstanding... pattern is available through ravelry here:

https://www.ravelry.com/projects/rachelgollub/basketweave-sweater-3

But I'm happy to just explain how to do it -- it's an easy pattern if you've made sweaters before.

I've been struggling for quite a while. I'm a person who has to try hard every day just to be OK and I live a very carefully curated life to make sure this is possible. Despite this, despite doing literally everything I can, sometimes I am not able to keep depression and PMDD at bay. That's soul destroying.

I speak about this because many people suffer and imo the only way to approach the subject is head on.

suehewit,
@suehewit@mastodon.scot avatar

@kristiedegaris Kristie, I had to google PMDD, and that’s shocking and proof of how little known or understood it is. That diagnosis either didn’t exist or wasn’t given medical credence when my younger self experienced those life altering symptoms.

suehewit,
@suehewit@mastodon.scot avatar

@kristiedegaris it affects everyone around you too, and that hurts but you just can’t help it. Eventually, after years of living a rollercoaster life, I found a doctor who actually listened, by which time I was in a very early onset peri menopause stage.

suehewit,
@suehewit@mastodon.scot avatar

@kristiedegaris yes and no. I got put on HRT, which did ease the symptoms a bit and helped keep the awful menopause symptoms in check… but extended the cycle of menstruation for a few years longer than it might have lasted without the HRT … in hindsight it might have been better to just get through menopause but at the time (I was in my mid/late 30’s) I had no idea how long it would go on for … into my 40’s 50’s?

suehewit,
@suehewit@mastodon.scot avatar

@kristiedegaris Now properly post menopause for 15+ years and life has been so much better. I’ve spoken to my, now grown, sons about how they were affected. They were so understanding of the somewhat Jekyll and Hyde mothering they experienced. I did talk about it openly with them at the time even though they were quite young/early teens and they did say that helped.

folks, I need your help coming up with a name for my textile upcycling showcase.

The event will feature 3 custom upcycled textile creations worn by 3 models during live fashion drawing session. Topped with a night of flamenco performance where the dancers wear costumes I either repaired, refashioned, or made from scratch with remnants / deadstock.

My head space is filled with executing the project that I can’t come up with an event name. Help! 😭
