It’s been a couple of years since I last read the Merchant Princes series by @cstross, which I revisit every so often - I’ve just finished re-reading The Bloodline Feud, which I loved and would highly recommend if you want a different take on parallel worlds, industrial development, culture clash and much, much more. I’m straight onto the next book now!

@MLE_online I went to the Visual Merchandising & Display Show the other day and discovered a company that specialises in cut foam display materials - a whole new world of squishy displays!

Last year, every time I finished reading a book I posted a few thoughts and a picture of the cover to - but this year I stopped (mainly because the first thing I read in 2024 was a bit of a slog and I ended up not liking it much!)

Today I decided to start again, as I miss being able to look back at my feed and see what I was reading at certain points. Also I’m so glad I finally got around to the Murderbot Diaries, great read at 4.30am today!

I don’t always feel like getting up early, taking the train to a stop further away and walking to the office along the canal towpath, but I’m very glad I did it today - perfect start to the day

Beck released the masterpiece Mellow Gold 30 years ago today (March 1) in 1994. I was 14. It's still one of my favorite albums. Mellow Gold is actually Beck's third album, but the one most folks are familiar with because of Loser. TONS of great songs on this one. My favorite might be Beercan, which I know well because I used to cover it. 🤣🔥

Cool playlist on YouTube with the lyrics as it plays: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrvkEGE7YpseJvj-duC7NlSfmwXEDvVc3&si=0i5vi8qRHRXwoO3R

@jake4480 fantastic album (am just ignoring the 30 years bit!)

And so it begins! I messed around with the colours quite a bit vs the pattern so I’m hoping the finished effect will not be too crazy for my mum

@CatherineFlick it’s a Marie Wallin cardigan pattern, called Honeysuckle, from her Gentle collection, but I’m knitting it in Jamieson’s Spindrift Shetland wool rather than the Marie Wallin British Breeds wool suggested, and have played around with the colours a bit

Waiting for cardigan wool to arrive, so obviously decided to try knitting a Totoro swatch to pass the time!

What do you want to learn/ do this year?

Last year I said I wanted to try brioche and double knitting, then did absolutely nothing about it! So this year I will learn brioche and double knitting (and possibly entrelac, inspired by the recent posts about this)

I have just ordered the wool for my mum’s birthday cardigan (luckily her birthday is in November so I have plenty of time) and I need to re knit my nephew’s Xmas jumper, as age 13 was still too small for his 11 year old self!

Weather is grey and windy so have just finished sewing up a pair of knitted baby joggers, from the same John Lewis pattern book that the bobbly hat pattern is from (reduced to £1.80 in the January Sale!) @knitting

week 3 - favourite technique
For me it has to be cables. I spent years thinking that it would be super-difficult to create cables - and then I tried them and it clicked and I’ve been messing around with them ever since. This is the first cable knit I made, in Debbie Bliss Tweed (heavily reduced) and a free pattern - I still wear it a lot

How this works with knitting:

Them: Wow, that's so good! You could make money doing that!

Me: [recites the cost of yarn and time to make current WIP]

Them: Oh.

@eyrea so true!

popchicken,
@popchicken@mstdn.social avatar

@eyrea every so often a friend will ask me to make something for them to order - I’m happy to knit it because I enjoy it, but it would be too horrific to cost it out properly, I’d rather ask them to give some cash to charity than even have that conversation!

Still thinking about this week’s prompts but in the meantime I have been finishing up a couple of knits for a forthcoming baby, whose mum really likes purple @knitting

I'm very excited to announce the first column of my "Decay Theory" series for Atlas Obscura. This one's about the death of the suburban American shopping mall. It's easy to write off the closure of malls as the result of online shopping - but their fate was likely sealed years before Amazon became the brick and mortar shredding juggernaut it is today. Here's the link! https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/the-life-and-death-of-the-suburban-american-mall

prompt: favourite fibre (and colour, sort of)

I honestly don’t get precious about this - yes, it’s amazing to knit with Rowan Sultano silk/wool mix but that’s only for very special (and small) gifts like hats, given the price per ball!

popchicken,
@popchicken@mstdn.social avatar

I love Shetland wool and Rowan Felted Tweed, as I enjoy a bit of Fair Isle knitting (and there is always some wool left over for baby jumpers afterwards!).

yay! Being relatively new to Mastodon last year, I found that these types of event were a huge source of inspiration and a great way of connecting with knitters, sewers, embroiderers and quilters across the Fediverse, so I’d like to start off my posts by thanking everyone who has put their time and energy into and events and posts here over the last year

I don’t have a photo of my mum and grandma here, but they got me knitting and sewing from an early age so when I reached my teenage goth/ student years I was knitting oversized jumpers or patterns from my mum’s pattern pile and pairing them with 1950s and 60s jumble sale finds (my tastes haven’t changed much since then!)

popchicken,
@popchicken@mstdn.social avatar

A couple of things that really got me knitting again in the early 2000s - stopping smoking (and needing something to do with my hands) and a trip to Shetland Museum, where I first came across Susan Crawford’s A Stitch In Time book, in which she revisits some amazing vintage patterns. I love all her work so would highly recommend @knitting

I’ve also worked with some amazing people, many of whom have become parents, so the thing I probably knit most often is baby jumpers/ cardigans. I tend to steer away from pastel colours (definitely no pink!) and try out different patterns and techniques for these
