It's a moment of sweet triumph when you see your name acknowledged on an exhibition text panel. 💪🏻

Too often #conservators and technicians are dismissed as behind-the-scenes, invisible, and irrelevant people, but without us it would often just be a curator with a hammer and a bunch of stuff in boxes. Thank you for remembering us! Especially us #freelancers. 🙏🏻

I've made Waffle a snuffle mat.

It's made from old curtains, a stained table runner, unloved felt, and upholstery fabric. The stuffed crust is actually full of old tights filled with fabric scraps and offcuts from craft projects.

Each slice is held down with velcro (for tearing off and trotting off with) and the toppings are pockets for dog treats or kibble.

It's a hit! 🍕

I love the moxy this protester conveys.

It's a dire week for and in unfortunately, and the protests and petitions didn't do enough to dissuade the Senedd from severe cuts. 😔

Appeal: does anyone have any juicy photos of museum/collection textiles that I may use in a training session? (With credit, obviously.)

I'm after:
👔 packed/stored textiles (stored well or poorly, your choice!)
👚 examples of different types of historic and modern textiles
👗 examples of damage to textiles (stains, tears, pest nibbles, anything!)
🧶 identified fibres under a microscope

Grateful for boosts! :boost_ok:

Someone shared this to the Welsh imploring them NOT to cut funding for cultural institutions:
https://petitions.senedd.wales/petitions/246088

Sign it if you can: these and are losing so much funding and so many staff members under the proposed cuts, it's absolutely unworkable.

Hey, speakers: turns out I can't pronounce Welsh for shit.

Well, at least not advanced stuff...

Could I borrow a lovely Welsh speaker who could read out some quotes for me so I can get the pronunciation and cadence even remotely correct?

I feel so out of my depth! Happy to provide you with context if you're up for it.

📰 York Castle Museum partially closed after discovery

Surprised we haven't seen more headlines like these: all over the country must be built out of the reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) they've discovered propping up the gallery ceilings in .

The concrete has a life-span of 30 years and we've been cheerily putting it in just about everything between the 1950s until the mid-90s. :yikes:

📰 "British Museum: How easy is it to steal from a museum?"

The recent thefts from the BM by a member of staff has gotten everyone talking about and their : here's an article unpicking some of it.

Thefts likely happen fairly frequently from a lot of collections, but they often go undiscovered for numerous reasons. Smash-and-grabs from outside thieves are a little more obvious!

I need a new desktop background so I'm fielding suggestions for quotes or motivational phrases to pop on a pretty background.

Must be:

  • actually uplifting
  • sarcastic, anti-capitalist, or weird

Bad examples:
"You got this!"
"Live, laugh, love"

Good examples:
"Not today, Satan"
"Eat the rich"

Whatcha got, Fediverse?

📰 "Bid to save last surviving postmen’s huts in Wales"

Rural postmen had a tough job in the 19th and 20th century, and these huts provided somewhere to rest and cook on their journey. Bit of a different world before the little vans arrived!

There are thought to be only eight or so left in existence in the UK and this one's being saved by the community in .

A tiny shuffle in the right direction from MGS: in are now required to pay Living Wage to apply for public funding.

Here's a radical thought: pay staff enough to live on.

List of Fair Work principles includes:

  • paying real Living Wage (minimum)
  • providing channels for workers’ voices
  • investing in workforce development
  • no abuse of zero hours contracts or fire-and-rehire
  • addressing gender pay gap & lack of diversity
  • offering flexible working
