I need to read more when not at the end of a long day: but who decides the default labeling service for the server? And is a "server" a PDS? Or another server?

"Users can have more than one Labeling Service, with a default given by your server and possibly more suggested as options. "

tchambers,

@shoq @atomicpoet @mekkaokereke @ben @davidslifka @davetroy @rogermcnamee @Green_Footballs

And who are "moderators" here? Owners of the PDS? Owners of each "labeling service?"

"...and then moderators resolve the reports by creating a label, issuing a takedown, or simply ignoring it."

tchambers,

@shoq @atomicpoet @mekkaokereke @ben @davidslifka @davetroy @rogermcnamee @Green_Footballs

Also: glad to see this: "and that servers are still able to take down content at their discretion."

Was looking to see if ONE server (PDS server?) can basically not allow content from ANOTHER PDS server to federate to it. Not sure.

@activitypubtestsuite

BTW, where is a blog post version of a long ๐Ÿงตof a rant I did yesterday on things Meta, that - no need to go into that part - but closed with why the need for a Test Suite for Activity Pub was a super big deal, and we need one - even in alpha form as soon as we can....

I thnk this article from @nexusofprivacy does a good job describing the back and forth over preemptive defederation of ...

https://privacy.thenexus.today/should-the-fediverse-welcome-surveillance-capitalism/

A few quibbles, friendly amendments:

One: I would replace "Trust but Verify" with "Watch Like a Hawk with Your Finger on the Block Button."

(I used that term once meaning it as Reagan used that old Russian aphorism - align warily knowing you NEED to verify as you think they could likely break the deal...)

tchambers,

@nexusofprivacy Second suggestion for an addition: I was very involved in the movement.

I'd add the note that one of the reasons for the full unity there is that it wasn't a preemptive strike at defederating.

It was NOT doing a first strike that helped us unify around a full fediverse-wide fediblock once they showed their intent. And even then, prior to the full fediblock, moderation tools helped off one by one cases well protecting our people.

tchambers,

@nexusofprivacy Very cool. And well written. As always.

tchambers,

@nexusofprivacy
Free thoughts from the peanut gallery consider add the text I put in CAPS if you agree. (obviously not adding them in capitalized form in the post)

" From this perspective, bigger is better: - AS LONG AS MODERATION AND TECH STANDARDS HOLD - AND ADDING more people in the network & broader adoption of ActivityPub is AN EQUAL priority WITH USER SAFETY"

And:

"Data mining, which he list firsts, isn't one of the top concerns on the Pact. ALTHOUGH IT IS A KEY ARGUMENT FROM OTHERS."

tchambers,

@timmy @nexusofprivacy I as one of the principal organizers then.

tchambers,

@nexusofprivacy Much appreciated!

tchambers,

@nexusofprivacy @timmy

It was post-launch: "almost immediately" - they joined - hate content intact and NOT preemptive.

"In the summer of 2019, the far right social network Gab migrated to the decentralized โ€œFediverseโ€ of social network... Almost immediately, Gab was met by a dedicated movement to isolate it. The movement was largely successful; within a year, the Gab CTO announced they would leave."

https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/decentralized-social-networks-vs-the-trolls/941

tchambers,

@nexusofprivacy @timmy

There was a warning: the code was forked and took a while for Gab to get live. Admins saw it coming.

I combined things from my winding thread of 10 posts last night into one article here, on and rather than forcing folks to follow post by post:

tchambers,

@oceane Thank you, Oceane! Your additional issue is spot on.

A variety of Fediverse servers and tech is key to wider more distributed network. Am a big fan of @bonfire and @gotosocial as well!

tchambers,

@timmy And if Spotify does the Podcasting standard will survive and others in that space will adapt around them - these battles are fought and won ALL THE TIME.

So Meta is reaching out to large instances to try and bring them into the fold.

Ha, this is going to be interesting.

I believe he meant that unless everything you post is in done in private "for mentioned users only" then everything is public and up for scraping.

Whatever happened with Tumblr adopting ActivityPub? Anybody here know if thatโ€™s still in the works?

tchambers,

@rmdes @chunked

Yep: Matt posted a few months back it is still actively in development, and since then Automatic put big resources into an ActivtyPub plugin that they have integrated into WordPress.com -- he said they are doing complex and careful work on how to migrate Tumblr over. No ETA yet tho.

tchambers,

@rmdes @chunked I do believe Matt said sooner or later all of Tumblr WILL be on Wordpress code under the hood. Think that is a LONG process tho.

Coming back to the @IceCubesApp codebase after almost two months is like I want to throw it all to trash and do it from scratch. But I know I won't do that, too little time.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Hot take: ๐Ÿ”ฅ

potential entrance into the Fediverse is the most over discussed topic on the Fedi right now.

(very much Including by me)

And and 's recent embrace of the Fediverse is the least.

And I suspect long term the later may have as much significance as the former. Maybe more.

I'd love to see that too!

tchambers, to Futurology

With the upcoming Fediverse service, there has been a, well, robust discussion of how to avoid threats looming. Those advocating mass-preemptive defederation make three cases for it.

โžก๏ธ To avoid data mining ...which Defederation does virtually zero to avoid any big tech entity scraping all the fedi public social graph today - Want proof?
see: https://is.gd/q8U2pv

The next argument is about poorly moderated P92 user posts and ad spam.
Which I'll discuss next.
