My mental health significantly improved when I blocked bad actors on Twitter, locked my account and moved to Mastodon / .

Would 100% do it again.

My Twitter account is basically an encouragement platform to my old followers to move over here.

tchambers,

@vsp You should check out @maystodon lots of folks doing the same type of organizing to help happen and to

This is now live - in early preview mode - full site launches in May! 🔥

Love to hear any thoughts, ideas and ways we all together build this movement to

tchambers,

@davidslifka @bloodwrites @spreadmastodon So maybe it could swap out which server it uses (every X sign ups) to decentralize the traffic across multiple servers - but still keep the on-ramp super easy.

tchambers,

@davidslifka @spreadmastodon

Agreed - love your notes on this effort to do that, @bloodwrites 👇

Thanks! What step would you suggest putting it at? Alway looking for feedback….

I don't remember who it was ( @tchambers or @atomicpoet ?) but I remember someone mentioned that the thing that'll bring this network up isn't a clone, but something new (and attractive.)
I've been thinking about it all day, and all I can come up with is "X existing or dead platform, but different." Maybe an imageboard (just one public imageboard), perhaps even keeping the infamous "anonymous". Maybe like Friendica but over Gemini (might do an experiment with that anyway). Nothing novel, though.

tchambers,

@blake @atomicpoet

Sounds like Chris.

I wrote about ActivityPub, and why Elon Musk might have saved social networks by buying Twitter — just not at all in the way he meant to https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/20/23689570/activitypub-protocol-standard-social-network

tchambers,

@pierce This was pretty great! one of the best articles in recent memory on this moment. Technically precise, but deeply readable and gave the perfect snapshot of this opportunity and the effort build on ActivityPub.

One of the things I love about the Fediverse is that it is growing in about 8 different directions and they all cohere.

From look at the top software undergirding the Fedi:

, , are all playing substantial roles...but are not "forks' of Mastodon but are entirely different apps, which benefit from Mastodon, and give value back to it. And are one Fediverse.

Hello Fediverse!

@Flipboard is currently a walled garden.

It's a beautiful, highly curated walled garden filled with content from the worlds best publishers and creators curated by Flipboard's editorial team as well as our community of magazine makers.

But it's still a walled garden. Today that begins to change.

We've moved four of our most popular desks into the Fediverse for you to enjoy.

This is a great innovation on how to do this - and way to bring human-curated content discovery to the . .

Hey look at this chart below, @pluralistic -- this is exactly the "scalloped growth" you predicted for Mastodon back in April.

"Each event triggers a high tide of new signups, but the low tide that follows is still higher than the old level. Surge after surge, the number of users steadily builds, despite the normal ebb and flow."

https://doctorow.medium.com/of-course-mastodon-lost-users-c48ef8102891

From this week👇

tchambers,

@pluralistic

“The people who stay on Mastodon make it a busier, more exciting place, which means that the next surge will find an even higher equilibrium, as users who try Mastodon find more fully acclimated users who can hold their hands as they get settled in, and also provide the vibrant community that presents a good reason for doing so.”

I'm just saying: the launch of
@wikipedia
@wikidata
@wikiresearch
nableDev
@wikisusdev
and @mediawiki ...

All that does feel like some big new steps.

So does moving to integrate Mastodon identify verification into software itself.

"The end goal is that I can put e.g. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Legoktm as a URL item and Mastodon will be able to verify it."

I'm going to be watching this VERY closely and supporting it however I can .👀

It is a stampede:

"Minnesota Public Radio has joined the growing number of public radio stations that are quitting Twitter.

'After much discussion, we concluded that continued use of the social media platform Twitter by our organization was contrary to our mission and core values..Instead of being a neutral and efficient channel for serving the public, Twitter is now actively aiming to undermine the integrity of public media organizations like ours.'"
