I realized that I never explained the various differences between all the different #Linux kernel variants, and since my Patrons and YouTube members voted for me to cover that topic, here we are!
I’ll go over what the real time, low latency, TKG, Zen, Liquorix, XanMod, Libre, LTS, or hardened kernels are, and which one you should pick!
@bargoderea That would require live patching the kernel, Ubuntu offers such a service, a regular sponsor of the channel, TuxCare, also does, although I’m pretty sure they don’t support Arch based systems!
@thelinuxEXP unfortunately, guess I am stuck with rebooting every month max, unless you can show me a git repo of such a tool so I can compile it myself, that shouldn't be hard, or does it?
Well, my #warhammer40k game didn’t go well, as I tried out a dumb Dread Mob list with a Stompa! Sisters of Battle wrecked the poor thing with multi meltas, and did the same to my Gorkanaut in the same turn.
Losing half my army in one turn left me struggling, we finished the game on 53 to 75. I drew horrendous secondaries that I could never score, and my poor Ork boyz got slaughtered by the Triumph of Saint Katherine. Still, insanely fun game, and the Stompa exploding caused a lot of damage!
@kopio@stallmer Yeah, I used to be very annoyed when I lost to one of my friends who always brings ultra competitive lists, and also plays really well, but nowadays I don’t care as much.
I won’t do secondary objectives that I don’t like or wouldn’t fit the narrative I want to build, and if it means I lose, I’m ok with it!
@thelinuxEXP Excellent video, Nick. Other ideas VP Monsieur Corpobull may also consider:
>Reserving highest CPU, RAM and IO speeds to subscribers only
>Full screen 30 sec video advert on log-in (without option to suppress)
>Disableware - Pay to unlock features already built-in (Like car manufacturers do with heated seats now)
>Ransomware – Pay monthly if you don't want us to syphon your data
>Sponsored UI themes & Icon Packs – Rolex clock in task tray, Bose speaker icon, FedEx mail icon
@bargoderea@tlenewspodcast The issue is, these ROMs didn’t support the phones that were suitable for the other criteria :)
It was either good hardware with bad software, or mediocre hardware with the software I wanted.
In the end, the iPhone worked better. I still look around regularly to see if the situation has evolved, and when comes time to change phones, I’ll probably move to a FairPhone.
@thelinuxEXP@tlenewspodcast still, an iPhone, I guess it is different on the EU but in tunisia, the cheapest supported one (which is old enough) costs at least 4K TND so anyone like me who loves Apple products but has a medium-high income must look at all sides on android phones (for an iPhone, one needs to have a veeeery high income because of side spending and taxes.... Etc) so you can certainly find what you need, you just need a connaisseur on the subject, not me
Time for this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video!
In this one, we have the law forcing #TikTok to sell or be banned in the US being passed, we have an article explaining why #Google Search is so much worse these days, we have the release of #Fedora 40 and #Ubuntu 24.04, and #Nvidia contributing to the NVK open source drivers:
@thelinuxEXP I must admit that where I grew up had me surprised by the accurate pronunciation of Arthur Huillet’s name in the Nvidia story, expecting something more along the lines of “Arr*-thurr Hwill-lett.” 😂
*(Like a pirate.)
#Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is out, so it’s time for a little video review!
I looked at the desktop changes brought by GNOME 46, the Ubuntu specific changes and what’s under the hood, plus the few changes that happened in the official flavors (no #Plasma 6 :( )
#CentOS 7 Will go end of life in about 2 months, and this isn’t the usual EOL distribution: this time, it’s the entire distribution that is being shelved, without any upgrade path.
So I decided to take a look at why it’s a bigger deal than usual, and invited Joao Correia from TuxCare and the Enterprise Linux Podcast for an interview, to explain the issues in more detail, since they are experts about this.
I played a #Warhammer40K game yesterday with my golden boys vs my friend’s Salamanders.
That was my first win in 4 games with the Custodes (admittedly, pre-Codex), the game ended after my turn 3 and before his, as he basically had no way of scoring anymore, and I had a 24 points lead, so he conceded. That was a fun game, I lost a ton of models, he did too, a slugging match!
No weird secondaries to handle, just a good, fun game for a change!
Shame all the Custodes saves are getting removed in the codex, it meant they could really just sit there and hold an important objective. My mate is a little upset about it but I'm sure it will get balanced or the strategies of play will have to change.
@joshfowler Yeah, I’ll wait until we get the real points to make a judgement, but what seems annoying is the lack of replayability / flavor in the detachments.
I already got the AdMech codex to deal with, it’s insanely underpowered, but at least there is some flavor and some fluff to play with: you know you’re not going to do anything, but it’s fun! I hope it will be the same for Custodes :)
I also play Orks, so at least I’ll have that to fall back on 😂
@thelinuxEXP@tlenewspodcast
I still think we shouldn't just discredit the concept even if big companies do it unethically.
So long as people still want ethical AI, people will make ethical AI. It might be less popular, but some people will still use it. I know that if it comes with the benefit of being run locally, at least some business's will want it just to avoid data leaks.
Not to mention that if ethical AI is out there governments can use that as a metric to ban unethical AI specifically
@enthusiast101@tlenewspodcast Meh, the argument of « let the market decide, people will vote with their wallets » never really worked.
People aren’t rational, they don’t do that. They’ll complain and groan and moan, but they’ll keep using the unethical nightmarish service if it’s snazzier looking and has 3% more performance.
In this one, #Gentoo says no to #AI, and Linus Torvalds finds it "hilarious", we also have a flaw in #Flatpak, plus #Cosmic showing off its theming capabilities, at least for GTK apps, plus some good news for Linux gaming!
New video!
In this one, I try and give a few tips if your battery life on #Linux is giving you problems.
Not the usual “lower your brightness and shut down all network connections”, because that works, but it’s not really a solution :)
So, I tackle TLP (the easy way), GPU acceleration in the browser (seriously that’s a big potential drain), moving online video to H264 (not all GPUs can decode VP8 or 9) and more!
The more I play #Warhammer40K 10th edition, the more I think the game system is disappointing. I just find the « rule stacking » that is encouraged in this edition to be illegible when fighting your opponent.
Each unit has a special rule, their attached characters have special rules on top, your army and detachment add extra rules, and stratagems give even more variance.
Did MKBHD ruin an AI company and their product because of their negative review of it?
No, the bad AI product ruined itself and its company. Just because someone created a business, found funding and created a thing doesn’t mean they should get instant recognition, and a pass for crappy stuff.
Entrepreneurs aren’t your friends, they aren’t superior, they don’t deserve to be coddled. When they make sht products, they should be told that they made sht. MKBHD did their job.
