I mostly use Signal to talk to people and I love it and what it represents, but iMessage is so tightly integrate in Apple ecosystem (plus, its desktop app isn't an Electron monstrosity). Sometimes I feel guilty for preferring iMessage over Signal 🫣
@manualdousuario is Element so difficult to use compared to Signal? I got both my aging parents to use Element, and aside from issues on my server UX is okay. The onboarding needs some handholding, but I guess that it's just a matter of patience and setting the right expectations.

If you don't know, it's a "OkCupid for Jobs" site that I did a couple of years ago. People answer questions and the system tries to find other people who are the most aligned with your professional values and the companies.

FYI I like watching the drinker's videos for the same reason I like watching stand up by Jimmy Carr or Ricky Gervais; I want to be used to hearing opinions I disagree with, especially when its ok to laugh at them. So, I’m curious: there’s a growing number of hosting platforms specifically for the #Fediverse. For those involved in this, who are comfortable with answering: is there a particular set of tools you use for managing, monitoring, and spinning up instances?
Are those tools open source?
I’m mainly wondering about whether there’s some kind of open platform / dashboard / infra tools that could serve a particular need for hosting / managing / provisioning Fedi servers, and whether the existing hosts in the space would benefit from a shared project of some sort.
Agree that community discovery is not ideal, but I think you are overstating the issue. Yes, communities can be duplicated. But, because instances contain copies of every community that is followed by at least one user there is always a "global" view.
Also, the UI sorts communities by their activity levels, so people naturally flock to the busiest ones.
The idea is not to have "one community for everyone" but a simple onboarding guide for those wishing to leave Reddit. Let them come to the places that they are "used to" at first, and once we got rid of Reddit we can start optimizing the new system.

Fully p2p and "trustless" systems makes zero sense when designing social systems. It is costly to operate and you still need to have some form of collaborative filtering / moderation.
Here's how to fix "Open-Source Security": pay every maintainer of critical OSS infrastructure the equivalent of a good Silicon Valley staff-level software engineer, keep them happy, and give them support whenever needed, whether it is testing, fuzzing, security audits, or whatever.
You don't just sit there and complain hobbyists not being able to produce unpaid work that is both always secure and reliable.
But this exists already, and I am not even talking about crypto. SEPA in Europe, Pix in Brazil, FedNow in the US... Most countries are already creating digital payment networks.

I'll tell you one thing: moderation is a lot easier on a paid instance. I might have only a handful of customers, but all of them have been amazing. Unlike "donation-based" instances, no one feels entitled to anything special just because they gave some bucks once to the admin. People are more civilized (trolls do not want to pay just to go around making other lives miserable) and so far all of them understand that a system where everyone contributes is more sustainable.

But I'll gladly add whatever is required to operate legally. It just feels a bit frustrating to think that no matter what one does, there will always be more barriers that people will place before supporting what seems to be an honest and clear practice. do you really trust a company more or less based on how well they conform to German Bureaucracy?

Anyone with a reddit account can go to https://portal.alien.top to claim their account at the alien.top #lemmy instance, and when they do so it gives you a list of your current reddit subscriptions and recommends the corresponding lemmy community.
Now, on to build and extend the lemmy communities so that we have more recommendations to make.
