Good morning to readers, #Kyiv remains in #Ukrainian hands.

Recent #Russian territorial gains have been made by upgrading #Soviet 'dumb' bombs into precision weapons.

In April they launched 3,200.

There is no weapon more responsible for recent Russian territorial gains over the past few months than the glide bomb.

They’re not particularly sophisticated weapons: they have adapted ‘dumb’ Soviet-era bombs into modern armaments by adding a package that lets them glide to a designated target.

But don’t let the simplicity fool you into complacency: in April, Russian troops dropped more than 3,200 of these bombs on Ukraine.

In fact, the simplicity is an asset, as glide bombs don’t require highly-technical skills to make, and they can be put together cheaply.

The total cost to convert a bomb is about $20,000.

Compare that to an Iskander short-range missile, for example, which costs a whopping $3 million.

In response to assault, forces are slowly falling back and are now about 5 miles from the border.

Although this tactic allows to gain ground it means that forces are able to slowly deplete the enemy's military capabilities, NYT reports.

planned to partially encircle Kharkiv and shell it with artillery, writes The Economist, which has obtained a plan of the Russian occupiers' offensive in the region.
