UC Santa Cruz researchers contributed to new studies out this week that enhance our understanding of exoplanets.

The first catalogs 126 exoplanets discovered detailing diverse planet types.

A second set, investigates "puffy" exoplanets like WASP-107b attributing their puffiness to tidal heating.

This research broadens our knowledge of exoplanet characteristics and formation.

An international team of scientists - including a research team from UC Santa Cruz - have discovered first known nitrogen-fixing organelle within a eukaryotic cell!

The organelle is the fourth example in history of primary endosymbiosis — the process by which a prokaryotic cell is engulfed by a eukaryotic cell and evolves beyond symbiosis into an organelle.

As the first of its kind, this discovery is one for the textbooks.

Presenting the largest 3-D map of our cosmos ever created!

UCSC astronomers are deeply involved in DESI—the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument—mounted atop a telescope in Arizona with a robotic array of 5,000 fiber-optic “eyes” that look into the night sky.

Now, DESI has made the largest 3D map of our universe to date. Watch the video and take an interactive flight through millions of galaxies mapped using coordinate data from DESI!

Donate money, plant a tree, help the environment. Seems like an easy win right? But the problem is, there’s a huge difference between simply planting a tree and making sure that trees survive and grow over the long-term.

UC Santa Cruz Environmental Studies Professor Karen Holl and a team of researchers explore just how successful tree planting campaigns for forest restorations can be with the right education.

The National Science Foundation recently awarded $3.9 million to researchers at UC Santa Cruz as the lead institution for the development of a next-gen telescope alignment system!

The researchers will work with an international team to build and test systems in Santa Cruz and eventually install the final designs in seven telescopes at three ground-based observatory sites around the world.

Looking forward to all of the new, exciting observations!

Say HELLO to exoplanet WASP-80 b! She's beautiful AND has a newly discovered atmosphere containing methane gas and water vapor.

UC Santa Cruz professor of astronomy and astrophysics Jonathan Fortney and graduate student Sagnick Murkherjee created computer models of the planet's atmosphere that aided in the interpretation of the planet's spectrum.

A global team of scientists that includes UC Santa Cruz Professor of Astronomy J. Xavier Prochaska have discovered an eight-billion-year-old fast radio burst – the most ancient and distant located to date.

The study is a prime example of the new era of multi-wavelength astronomy, where facilities observing different types of light are used together to reveal more than they could do individually.

We are dismayed to see the U.S. Supreme Court chipping away at the legal protections and freedoms of same-sex couples and people in additional protected classes.

We continue to live in an era of othering, with some individuals not treated with the same respect and protection as others. We remain in solidarity with all members of our community who continue to have to fight to secure the rights, freedoms, and the sense of belonging that many of us all take for granted.
