Well, fuck you Stack Overflow. I deleted my answers and have now deleted all my accounts.

@risike It definitely is still there. They undeleted the content, which thankfully wasn't a lot because they've always been gatekeeping asshats over there. My account is still there too as they completely ignored my GDPR request.

The only 100% sure thing here is that I will never contribute an iota of content to that site ever again. Exploitation is definitely a deal breaker.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

Microsoft’s new “Recall” feature will record everything you do on your PC

Recall uses Copilot+ PC features "to take images of your active screen every few seconds."

@blabberlicious It's always good to keep in mind that Altman is also the guy behind the Worldcoin crypto scam/grift. Everything he does is a money grab, and he doesn't seem to care about the consequences of his actions.

I've written up my experiment with upscaling Star Trek Deep Space Nine from my DVDs to HD. It's a pretty long post, but I hope it is useful 😊

Which best describes you?

("records" in this context are shellac, vinyl or resin etc. recorded sound discs played using needle)

If you have some records you can play and others you can't choose the third option.

If you have a player but it's broken choose the first option.

You "own" a player if one is in your home and you can use it when you want.

You "own" records if you are one of the people who must be asked if they were sold or thrown away.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@futurebird Close enough, but "I own records" plural is technically wrong, as I own exactly one 45 record. 😁

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@futurebird I've have asked a few times if I can have the old player sitting in a storage room at my mom's house, but even though it hasn't been used in decades, I haven't been able to talk her into giving it to me yet. 😁

@futurebird I tried to search for images of the model, and I think this is the one. With green backlit touch buttons.

Never mind Siobhan, Merriam-Webster should mind its language and remember that English is not the only window on the world.

veronica,

@MacNaBracha And on the flip side, replacing an unaccented Latin character with an accented one changes completely how it's pronounced.

I'm looking at you, English speaker, who think replacing "O" with "Ø" just makes it look cooler!

Defaced some of my Stack Overflow answers again because the people who own that site are triple-A fartwaffles who are fucking over the community.

P.S. They smell bad.

@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@Natanox @PierreM @thomasfuchs They ignored my GDPR request, even though they stated in their reply that the posts were mine by license.

(GDPR applies to Norwegians too.)

Edit: The main issue here is that you can't actually delete an account, only delete profiles for the various sites. That's likely the main GDPR violation. In any case, they ignored it.

I feel the same way about AI that I did about crypto when it started becoming a thing:

• All of the moral practices that make it possible are fucked beyond repair.

• It’s spawning some of the worst companies, and enriching some of the worst billionaires in the world.

• While there are some genuinely useful, practical applications for it, there are so few of them, and they have had so little positive impact so far, that it doesn’t even seem like it’s going to be worth it anytime soon.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@skydog @oldguycrusty @nileane @sigmund Agreed. I've worked a bit with ML, and followed it for years. It's very useful tech, with a lot of known limitations and issues.

The current boom of generative "AI" (which isn't AI at all) is largely a money grab and stock bubble at the expense of privacy and energy, and a boom to fraud and misinformation at a time in our history where it can do a lot of social damage. As if the tech bros ever cared about the consequences.
